Just got back from final muzzle loader deer season in Kentucky. It sucked badly. The weather was in the mid to upper 60's with rain coming and going for the last 2 days. Basically we would get up at 4am and be in our spots before the sun came up. There were 3 of us and we all took different spots to try to cover the best possible area or what we thought was the best possible area. After the sun was up we would sit in our spots all day. The sheer boredom drove me partially insane. and then round about 4 i would start to get excited at possibly the deer getting on the move again. I never saw any deer just their beds and lots of poop and tracks so the suckers were there.
We tried coming with all kinds of excuses why this hunt was terrible. The weather was too hot and the deer were comfortale and didn't need to move to keep warm. The deer don't like to move inthe rain unless they had to. The deer have been beat on since sept and were not in the area anymore( I guess they took a vacation), the deer don't like people from NJ (me). Is any of these true? Is there anything i could have done to improve my chances? Example like deer urine, grunt calls, bait, although I'm not sure that is legal in KY), walking around trying to find them. We didn't use blinds we just sat up atop of the road and clearings probably 10-15 up the slopes. i guess about the height of a treestand. no masks just camo and blazing orange hat and vests.
There area was in and around the town of Corbin and whitly county. That said I had a very nice time down there. the people were very friendly but were kinda hard to understand. I am already planning with my Brother-in-law for next year's hunt. Maybe we'll try earlier and reg rifle season.
