Hey guys I am not only new to this group but new to distance shooting. I have been shooting for a long time and want to get into more distance shooting and learning more about ballistics, optics, rifles, and equipment. Does anyone have any books or anything like that they would recommend me looking into? Thanks!

Just browse around the forums here. Ive learned a ton just reading various threads. You can pick up something in pretty much every thread. The stickies are a great place to start too!

Folks wanting to get into LR have notions about it, that's to say, they think they know what's important to the concept; and, with such a mindset, seek out knowledge about equipment, sights, supports, and ammunition. Thing is, these considerations, outside a context of basic marksmanship, are not the aids to good shooting they are seen to be. My suggestion, attend a CMP Clinic and then get your feet wet in some sort of NRA LR event using borrowed equipment. From initial failure, you will see what's really important and thereby be prompted to study upon the elements, principles, and factors which are actually meaningful to LR success instead of wasting time on topics which will only detour you from your destination.

I totally agree with these comments. Learn from trial and error with direction from a professional. Getting accurate advise on the internet is like asking people on the street what is correct and incorrect. However, this site does have a lot of professionals with tons of knowledge.

Might I recommend some of the videos from this site created by "Lowlight" Frank? They seem pretty darn good and Frank stands behind those videos.

Welcome to long range shooting and good luck. Let us know how things go!!

I agree with SS but want to add, when you sign up for the CMP Clinic, and start HP, you're going to find most of the more experience shooters at that clinic or match will take you under their wing and give you coaching, hints, etc. to help you get started on your path.

To give you an idea, at my first HP match, about 40 years ago, I showed up with a brand new M1A and a hand full of ammo. I left that match with new friends who gifted me a shooting jacket, used leather sling, shooting glove, and knowledge on how to shim my rifle. Still had my ammo, reloads, they wouldn't let me shoot it, the gave me proper ammo.

I out grew the jacket, stretched out the sling, but I still use the glove.

Take SS's advice, you can get ideas of what's suppose to happen from books and videos, but nothing beats hands on coaching from knowledgeable people who are watching you shoot.

Putting in a location would help.

I find that a good course gets me started out right without bad habits. MUCH better than spending time figuring things out, to find out you figured them out wrong and now have to try to unlearn things.

I am out in California and really interested in finding one of these courses to take.

Go to the CMP website for a list of upcoming clinics in your area

CMP Club & Competition Tracker | Upcoming Competitions and Events

Kind of thin now but more will be available come spring.

For information, the CMP has started creating a list of Master Instructors who are willing to travel to different clubs to conduct Clinics. If you can't find a clinic in your are, have your local club contact the CMP to find an instructor who will conduct a clinic for you.
