Shot my first coyote. I am in the process of moving right now and showed up at my new place(house on 3 acres just outside of town bordered by cow fields and timber) at 6:30 am June 2. I thought I heard a goat in distress. I look approx 100 yards away and see a deer that looked to be caught up in the fence. I looked a little closer and saw two pairs of ears and tails in the tall grass surrounding her. I ran inside and grabbed my shotgun that was set up for turkey season. I started toward the deer and 1 coyote saw me and left. The deer then ran toward me and the other coyote followed her. The deer was stamping at and trying to hit the coyote with her nose the whole way. At about 35 yards I let 3 1/2 inches of turkey load out of my 870 with turkey choke fly. Coyote went down never to get up and the deer fled unharmed. I did not go look where I first saw the doe fighting with the pair of coyotes in hopes that if there was a fawn she would return. The coyotes followed the deer after it left the first place I spotted her so I wonder if they were trying to take a healthy deer down? I have been told coyotes do not do this. It was a great start to a day. I wife gave birth to our first child a boy the day before, I considered killing the coyote a sign.
