Flat Dark Earth Ionbond?

Anybody have pics of FDE Ionbond on a rifle? All the pics on the net that show it are dark, with colored tinges to the photo so I can't tell if it appears gold metallic or what in real life.

Pre-ordering a Badger M2013 when they start taking orders and don't know what to coat it with. Don't want black or I would just nitride it. Not sure if Cerakote will work on the bolt as far as tolerances go. Any thoughts on this are welcome from people who've been there with the M2008.

Totally off subject, but I want to see more pictures of that lightened 1911 slide...it almost looks like a high-end free float AR tube with that many holes cut into it.

Is this ionbond better than cerekote? If you have this stuff applied can it be done and not be inside the barrel? Also are the places above this post good places to have it done?

Thanks for the links, still looking for anyone who has a pic of actual FDE on a rifle with good lighting. That 1911 done in "FDE and black" on jabuie.com is the same one Springer Precision's site has listed as "Copper", hence the questions. The Sig slide they show on Springer Precision in FDE is a dark pic and makes it appear much like Glock's 3rd gen OD frames, which I would like if that's what it actually turns out looking like.

I guess my real concern is whether or not it'll turn out looking metallic or shiny, more than the color tone. I don't wanna end up with a tactical rifle that looks like a Twilight vampire with jaundice. Thanks for the replies so far.

Cerakote is an actual coating that is applied then baked on. This process can add up to a couple thousandths to the surface of the material being applied.

IonBond is a Vapor Deposition process. The item to be "coated" is put in a vacuum chamber where the plating/coating material is attached via electrical discharge method...thickness is measured in microns. Think of TiN )Titanium Nitride coatings...

which is better? Probably Ion-Bond...but you'll have to ask around...I'm brain farting on the specs

I did search, exhaustively: I use Bing, Google is anti-gun but go ahead and support them if you like. As stated, there are no pics of rifles (on Bing) and the pistols shown were poor quality pics.


I'll just go with it when all my stuff comes in.

I have cerakote on my badger M2008 action and have no issues with it its nice and silky smooth. The big trick is to ensure you have a professional applying it.

Ion Bond is far tougher than Cerakote. It isnt applied, it is literally a change in the atomic structure of the surface metal. It is an incredibly hard and durable finish.

Barreled Action - $270
Action - $165

Complete Upper - $225
Complete Lower - $200

After speaking with Springer Precision, It's my understanding that in order to have your firearm/part coated, you must first send everything to an authorized IonBond dealer, who then sends it to the actual coating facility.

Do you have any details on how the FDE Ion Bond differs from the standard black? I had my action and barrel done in black and they do the bore as well, no masking.

Are you sure about that? Springer seems to be a dealer (only manufacturers seem to be able to go directly to Ion Bond), see their work order for sending in jobs. I had my rifle done through them last fall, my smith was not a "dealer" as they were unfamiliar with them.

At the time I had mine done they quoted a five month lead time. It took three and a half months.

No details on how it differs from black, but Springer Precision told me yesterday they don't do the bore. For expediency's sake I'll just have the action done in Ionbond while I wait on the barrel to come in and the barrel I'll have Cerakoted in FDE like the rifle I already have when the build is done.


For those asking about pricing, Springer Precision quoted the following to me yesterday:

$185 for receiver only
+$85 for the bolt
+$95 for the barrel
-----------------------------
$365 + shipping to and from for a complete action and barrel.

the aluminum tube, stainless steel barrel, action, rings, and base, and magazine are all FDE Ionbonded. NIghtforce scope is Cerakoted. Coyote Tan if my memory serves me correctly

Regarding the shine on ionbond products I have seen plenty of pistols done with it and like everything else it all depends on the prep work. I have seen the top of a slide blasted with 80 grit AO and it leaves a very dull surface, as well as flats that are left at a mirror polish and it looks like black glass.

Todd at Phantom Finishing was offering some ionbond, he did some rifle bolts for me and I love the stuff, very comparible to Robars NP3 in its practical application.

I did not do the main portion of the chassis because it needed to be completly disassembled prior to Ionbonding. I did not want to have the folding portion of the chassis taken apart so I told them not to Ionbond it. As far as the aluminum, as long as its hard anodized, the Ionbond works just fine. Although the gentleman who done the work said the foreend tube was a pain in the ass because of the holes. I believe theres a significant amount of prep work done at the Ionbond facility.
