Me too, plus the FLIR Personal Vision Systems division that produces the PS-24,PS-32, LS-32, LS-64 handheld thermal imagers is coming out with a Thermal Weapon Sight!

Should be nice.
 
One of the keen new things about this instrument is that it is more of a "Fusion" like detector with FLIR's patented Multi Spectral Dynamic Imaging that allows the integration of a normal visual light camera photo with the thermal photo for much higher detail with the Lepton microbolometer.
 
Anyone else see the little disclaimer at the beginning of the video?

The size of the germanium lens on this system has got to be tiny, however their new microbolometer is also tiny as well and performs a "Fusion" like integrated visual light camera photo image with the long wave IR thermal image using their patented Multi Spectral Dynamic Imaging alogrithim.

What I was wondering if the images shown were actually from the iPhone unit? The disclaimer said something to the effect of "all images were taken with thermal, maybe just not the one we are advertising".
However, They were all pretty impressive, so if even one was taken with it, you've got a winner. In any event, I doubt FLIR would introduce a substellar product.
Im stoked to check it out next week! Ill look for the guy with a dog shirt and a shoulder holster ;)

The resolution and focus (on the FLIR for iPhone) will be comparable to what you get via the camera lens on the iPhone, with emphasis on broad field of view versus ability to resolve fine detail at distance. It's not going to transform an iPhone into a T-50/60/70/75.

The PED integrated solution in my photos will resolve fine details at both close and long range (800+ meters), but uses an entirely different set of technologies.

There is no way any $350 smartphone device is going to go head to head with any $10-20,000 mil-spec thermal weapon unit .

Smartphone cameras themselves have no where near the resolution of a digital SLR camera with a 50mm lens.
 
LOL, I would NOT be surprised if you can detect mammals out to 100 yards with this device and would be excellent for searching for wounded animals at night who got as far as their last breath.

Also, this new Lepton core is not like any other core, and the correlation between core pixel size and germanium lens size may or may not be as directly related as they are in the Tau cores....who knows, but we will soon find out as I will be at SHOT next week and FLIR GS booth is right across the isle from where I am!
 
Can some one just answer the range of human/mammal detection in layman terms? Don't give a shit about the cryptosporidium lens and useless jargon. How far does it work?
 
For the sake of all mankind, don't let VJJ get his hands on one of these. No telling what pictures would be hitting the internets! For those of us that saw Skypup's post on this and bought some FLIR stock imeadiatly......We have made some good money today! Thanks good sir!
 
Here is a shot of the real time image at the CES show in Vegas though the FLIR I-Phone:

It has about 1/2 the thermal resolution of the PS-24 but 3x the capture rate.

P.S. There's going to be a bunch of hog, coyote and varmint shooters on $350 "thermal weapon scopes" killing $1000+ calves instead. LOL

I have an I-Phone real time video camera mount that I can attach to my ACOG or ELCAN scopes behind my FLIR thermal weapons sights, no way will I actually be shooting anything while looking at the I-Phone screen, however you can also mount an I-Pad to the objective lens of the scope and THAT would be shootable, but rather bulky, fragile, and unwieldy....
 
BTW, FLIR Personal Vision Systems division, which markets the PS-24, PS-32, LS-32, LS-64 to the consumer market (and is totally separate from the Government Systems division that produces mil contract thermal weapon instruments for SOCOM) will release a thermal weapon scope based on the LS-32/LS-64 hand held scanners at the SHOT Show for the commercial sporting goods market.

Yes, I have Technical and Subject Matter Experts from FLIR working with my engineering teams. The small arms thermal weapon scopes for USSOCOM are at the middle tier of the advanced imaging technologies. There is an entire tier -- from FLIR -- that has double the thermal sensitivity, four times the effective range for detection, four times the resolution, and all in hand portable or weapons mountable packages. Combine these with the latest technology for thermal marking and multi-band fusion and it is a whole new world at the tip of the spear! The good news is that many of these technologies are only about 5 years away, at most, from trickling down or crossing over to the retail consumer. I'm certain this is not lost on the business units of FLIR Personal Vision Systems.

Damn, I hope I was not born too late for this, I am getting older, but acquiring everything I need now to enjoy in my retirement every day (and night) of the year!

Moore's Law ... like death and taxes! Heck, 50 years from now, kids will be pulling multi-band imagers the size of bottle caps as free prizes out of their boxes of Cracker Jacks (made with Soylent Green). :)

With this new technology (size/cost) shouldn't we see a new generation of low cost thermal imaging scopes/sights? Maybe aimpoint or acog sized units? Under $1000.00

COTI imagers as small as Aimpoint Micros have been built on 25 micron thermal cores for more than half a decade now, and we already have technology to transfer the thermal imagery in real time and via wireless comms from the COTI to small injectors that will infuse the thermal image into day optics or night vision optics. BAE has been supplying these individual warfighter imaging solutions to our armed forces for more than several years.

Lower pricing in the under $1,000 range will depend on consumer demand. If the FLIR ONE sells as well as the iPhones do, this will fund and accelerate its core technology for higher resolution, greater sensitivity, and longer range performance in even smaller sized consoles at lower prices. The FLIR ONE is not the only player in this space of "personal" thermal imaging for mobile devices.

Though FLIR is a powerhouse in LWIR imaging, they have gone head to head with other major, electro-optics firms on government requirements (RFPs) for COTI development and have not come out on top. The consumer market is even more complex and challenging to dominate than the government space. Whichever company provides the most friendly and capable development protocols and environment for extending the application of their personal thermal imaging products will win in the personal computing and communications space.

This opens up some scary scenarios, the night is no ones friend anymore. Nice though, I echo the sentiment above, where were you guys with this stuff 30 years ago.

Keep in mind, this is working in conjunction with the phones camera. In the dark, the camera wont pick up a large portion of the details in that picture. So unlike normal thermals it probably wont work as good at night as it does during the day. Orrrrr, I could have totally mis-understood IR-V when he tried to break it down to a level my little redneck brain can comprehend. In that case, disregard. Lol.
By the way, there is already a thermal smaller than this that is good enough to drive with.........It also is unavailable to us mere owners of this country.

No. Show is too crowded to try it more than 25 feet. IMO this is a short range device. It overlays a digital image on the thermal image so it is questionable how good an image taken in complete darkness will be. It is priced at $350 so set your expectations accordingly.
