? For the guys running short barrels

I am going to pick up one of those Dicks Remmy 700 on the black Friday sale for my son in .223. (with the coupons my wife has I will be able to get one for right about $300) They come with a 26 inch heavy barrel so I want to have it cut down and recrowned. Just want opinions on a good length? Somewhere from 16 to 20 inches. What do you suggest? This will be for plinking/coyote hunting. Shot out to 3-400. Maybe 600 at steal for fun. (he loves shooting my 308 at my 600 yard steel)

18.5" is a pretty good all-around length for .223/5.56...what is the twist? What weight rounds are you planning to shoot?

I have a Rem 700 in 308 that I cut down to 22in and recrowned. That thing flat shoots factory and hand loads.

I've shot a 18 inch gasser out past 700 with good results. I'm not sure if the dicks one will have a 9 or 12 twist, but I wouldn't go longer than 18.

Ive also got an 18" that has shot out to 700. It likes 75gr BTHP, but has a 1-8 twist that seems to work better with the heavier bullets

Good question? I will have to check on the twist. As far as bullet weight, I'll just match it to the twist and find a load that works.

Do you guys think it is worth putting a break on a short barreled .223?

My 20" barreled .223 SPS hardly has any recoil at all. I don't think a break is necessary.

I think the Dick's rifles, being ADL Varmints, will have 1:12 twist...

Yes; they are 1:12. Only way to get a 1:9 would be to go with a SPS Tactical. It comes with a 20" barrel.

No worries, though, the 1:12 will still fling those 55-60 grainers out there far enough. cut her back to 20" and go shooting....

My bolt .223 a 16.25" but is a 1:8 twist. Most common distance for me is 500m and it hammers there.
