i am looking to get a 10/22 and have a few questions...

are the 30 round mags you can get a dicks reliable?

is a bull barrel necessary on a 22 rim fire?

i have a few suppressors coming in a few weeks, would i be better off having the OEM barrel threaded, or get the yankee hill:

are there any after market stocks? the OEM are too small for me.

As for the magazines from Dicks I'd stick to the bx-25 (rugers magazine) bought a 30rd double stack and I don't think I ever ran through the whole magazine without a jam.

Well first of all, I guess I have to agree with DFOOSKING, I dont't like the plastic trigger group RUGER went to, but I don't know that that's reason not to buy one, or go to a KIDD or VOLQUARTSEN.
I have a few friends that have replaced the trigger group and the barrel and now have a real shooter. Based a lot on my 2 friends I'm thinking of, I'm beginning to think more and more that the optics you go with really make the difference. One buddy has a Nikon pro-staff and the other has what I considered total overkill, a US OPTICS piece. I think it's called a SN-1, but long story shorter, it is sooo easy to shoot his into little bitty groups. I think it compares to the other rifle, they both have Bull Barrels from KIDD.
All that said I think a Ruger 10/22 tuned up with a trigger and barrel or such can get you a real shooter, and still less $ than a full blown KIDD or VOLQUARTSEN.

As far as the bull barrel is concerned, I personally have a midsize from CLARK, (and a kidd tigger group) and mine shoots really well-so I haven't felt the need to go ALL the way to a BULL or .920 contour.

FWIW:

Mine shoots a 1 inch 20 shot group at 50 yards with bulk ammo and factory trigger.

Accuracy can get much better with ammo, trigger, barrel, stock, and optics upgrades (my experience has them in roughly that order).

I would skip the bull barrel. A lot of weight and the 22LR is not known for overheating a barrel.

You can easily spend $2K on upgrades. McMillan even makes stocks.

I would get the slimmer YHM barrel and skip getting the factory tube threaded.

Get that barrel and a good trigger installed, and then play with ammo before you do much else in upgrades.

Hogue Overmolded stocks are popular, but for $500 McMillan will make you a real nice one . . . .

I numbered your questions and here's my thoughts.

#1 - I do not know what brand of 10/22 mag Dicks sells so I can't answer this directly The best quality hi cap 10/22 mag I have found is the Tactical Innovations TI25. They are also more expensive but you get what you pay for. If you do not want to pay for TI mags find some Ruger hi caps - BX-25s I think - they have a good reputation. Most of the time I just take the factory 10 rounders out anyway.

#2 - A bull barrel is not necessary, Barrel quality is more important than barrel diameter. I suggest that you replace your barrel with something from the aftermarket and then pick the barrel profile that fits your preferences.

#3 - Personally I would not spend the money modifying the stock barrel. While I have not owned a YHM barrel I do own several of their AR-15 parts and my guess is that the YHM barrel would be better quality than the stock barrel.

#4 - There are lots of aftermarket stocks. Here is one of many sources.
