Hello everyone! Even though I've been a member here for a bit, i figured since I don't post here often I'd say hello formally. I'm an avid shooter in IDPA and with my AR's. I have Greg from Southern Precision (Bug Holes, super nice guy) putting together a new bolt gun for me, which I should have in May/June. Specs on it are as follows-

Surgeon 1086R action
Krieger .300WM, 1.250" straight, 26", 5R 10 twist-thinking about having him put an AMU taper on it
AI AX chassis with 16" for-end
Jewell trigger
Nightforce BEAST (pre-ordered yesterday)
SPUHR mount

Like I said I just wanted to formally introduce myself and say hello. Any constructive criticism is always welcomed as I know tho site is a wealth of knowledge.

Re: Formal introduction

Welcome to SH. You have made a great choice in components, and guy to build you your precision rifle. The only thing I personally don't like if it were mine is that straight 1.250 contour for a tactical precision rifle (sorry Greg). It will weigh more than you want, and won't look proportional. Remember, this just my opinion.

Re: Formal introduction

Thanks guys! Also maybe my post was misleading or poorly worded. Greg is suggesting I have it turned down to an AMU taper instead of leaving it a straight taper. I'm still torn as what to do at this point. I know that a straight cylinder at 1.250 will weigh a ton, but am I losing anything at all with going with an AMU contour? Any body with pics that would help greatly!

Re: Formal introduction

I am going with a fluted sendero contour and have no worries about it.
Not interested in hauling around the extra weight of an AMU barrel.
A profile of sendero, or medium palma is all you need in my opinion.
With the AMU profile, AI AX chassis, and the BEAST scope, you will have a very heavy rig.
What weight do you want your completed rifle to be?

Re: Formal introduction

I definitely realize this will be a heavy gun, but it'll mainly be used for punching paper so I'm not too concerned with the weight. I'd like to get involved in some local long range matches too.

Welcome

Depending on the type of long range matches you will be doing you might not like that heavy of a contour. Bench/Prone matches it would be preferred, but if your going to "run and gun" tactical type matches, its going to be a heavy. The barrel alone will weigh 9lbs before action chassis and scope.

Barrel 9lbs
Scope 2.5lbs
Action 2.25lbs
Chassis 5.5 lbs
Spuhr .5 lbs

Sounds like a badass build though!!!

I agree, there's no getting around it, it's gonna be heavy. Like a previous poster said, I wonder if ill have any issues with it heating up faster with an AMU profile. I'm having it threaded for a TBAC suppressor (future purchase), any I wonder if I kept it with no taper if it'd just look awful with a can on it. I keep looking at all the awesome threads on here for reference pics but I'm still having a hard time making up my mind.

There was a gun on here just like your build (AX+straight barrel with suppressor). I will see if I can find it for you.

Good thing is if you don't like the heaviness you can always get it recontoured later.

That would be great if you could find it, I've been looking through the different pic threads, but haven't seen that particular rig. It sounds exactly like what I'm having built!

Good thing you won't be toting that thing around...Otherwise, eat your Wheaties cause The Beast weighs nearly 3.5lbs LOL!

Be sure to post pics when your rig is in, as I am sure it will turn out slick...and if you get your TBAC (30P-1 for me) before me, I promise not to like you...not even on Facebook!

+1 for Hiders not giving a rip how many friends you have, or what you did today, or what you're wearing, or...that stuff was ridiculous...you know!? LOL
