Im curious what kind of free space is recommended for precision shooting? I have seen anywhere from .010" to .040".

I believe he's referring to freebore or the bullet's "jump" to the lands.
I like mag length or .010-.015", whichever comes first.

Yea, sorry if I used the wrong terminology, but Im referring to the space between the bullet and the rifling in the barrel when chambered..

Well in the case of my AR30, mag clearance isnt an issue. However my length @ the ogive is about 2.320" which seems a little excessive to me for a 175gr SMK. I was looking at other people's load data and they are loading at 2.2xx". Should I go with what my gun says, or is that excessive?

Anything closer to the lands than 0.005 can end up on the lands if the temperature at the reloading station and the temperature at the final firninig position is significantly different. So, either greater than 0.005 away from the lands or 0.005 into the lands.

Wow! Never thought of that. Never affected me because mine are .01 jump, but great point.
