Took my son to watch some of the competition today. Arrived at Griswold Range for the Unknown Distance shooting. Tough conditions to be competing in. Conditions at 1030 were cloudy, 48 degrees with gusty winds from NW at 10-15 mph, shifting and gusting up to 25 or so. We watched three rotations. Each rotation had 5 shooters and 5 spotters take 5 shots each. The last group we watched a total of 7 hits out of a total of 50 rounds fired for that rotation. Competition continued this afternoon with stress shooting at Maertens Range. Tonight is the night movement. As I type this it has begun to rain lightly and 18 mph wind. Low will be in the upper thirties on Ft. Benning. Unusual conditions for our area this time of year. Good luck to all the competitors!

Re: Ft. Benning-International Sniper Comp.

I wish I had taken a digital camera. I didn't think that would be acceptable as not everyone wants their mug shown. This was our first trip to the comps. but I did see a couple of folks taking video. I guess it would have been Ok. There were several professional looking crews there doing documentary video and a few interviews going on. We really enjoyed the trip.

Re: Ft. Benning-International Sniper Comp.

Man if it's that crappy already how bad will it be for the AMU's 3 gun match in Dec.
I'd love to be able to watch the sniper comps, some of the worlds best.

Re: Ft. Benning-International Sniper Comp.

Was Robbie Johnson competing this year? I believe he and his partner won last year's match.

I had the pleasure of shooting in the same squad with Robbie and Daniel Horner at the Area 6 3-gun match earlier this month. Both were incredibly impressive shooters (pistol, rifle and shotgun) and won their categories at the 3-gun match.

Just plan to layer up Keith, it'll be ok!

Re: Ft. Benning-International Sniper Comp.

The AMU guys are not shooting this year. I was trying to get a team together from my LRS team but with them just getting back from Iraq it would have been hard. Equipment and everything still in Iraq.

Re: Ft. Benning-International Sniper Comp.

I am originally from Greybull Wyo. and the buzz about town is that a young Marine from my hometown has bragging rights about now. They are just rumors though. My dad called me this morning and gave me this info. I searched the net to confirm but nothing is posted anywhere.

Unfortunately no. I'm in training and out of the loop this year as well as next year. Hopefully either 2011 or the 2012 comp I'll get to hit it up.

Re: Ft. Benning-International Sniper Comp.

This was from a press release:

A team of Marine Corps snipers based at Camp Pendleton's Scout Sniper
School managed to snuff out the competition to win the ninth annual
U.S Army International Sniper Competition at Fort Benning, Ga.
yesterday.
During the event, which took place Oct. 15-22, competitors were tested
in a range of skills, including field firing, advanced marksmanship
and nontraditional firing positions.
The teams were divided into two classes, with the service class
featuring teams firing 7.62mm or smaller rounds as a primary or
secondary weapon system, and the open class made up of teams firing
rounds in a caliber larger than 7.62mm. The Marines won the service
class, plus were the overall winners. A Company, 2nd Battalion, 46th
Infantry Regiment, 194th Armor Brigade from Fort Knox won the open
class.
The field included duos from Ireland, Spain, Great Britain, the U.S.
Air Force, USMC and Army National Guard. SWAT teams from around the
U.S. were represented, and there were state police tandems from
California and Massachusetts.

Re: Ft. Benning-International Sniper Comp.

I was a strap hanger at the match and attended the awards Banquet.
Some of the above information about who-won-what might be inaccurate.

The Marine Scout/Sniper Instructors from the West coast won the Service Class. This is true.

As I recall the Open Class/Overall winners well.......
Those guys were not getting their pictures taken.

But frankly, I'd been drinkin' so I might be wrong.

Nice glass, why's it empty?

That's great about the Marines taking the Service Class category. Were the Open Class winners from the US?

Re: Ft. Benning-International Sniper Comp.

Hopefully the professional looking crews shooting video were the crew from Top Sniper, so we get to watch yet another year's fun!

Congrats to everyone that got to participate, and thank you for your service and skills!

I read somewhere that that is one of their top shows for the two years that they have put it on the Military Channel. So my guess is yes

Know what I will be watching at the beginning of next year. I am glad to see more LE there

The USMC kicked some butt!! HOOORAH!!

I had the honor of being one of the event sponsors and got to meet a lot of the shooters.

I met one of the Marine shooters at the sponsor shoot. I have never seen anyone run a bolt gun as fast as he did!!! he ran one of my rigs like it was a gas gun, just unreal.

Here is a pic of one of the USMC Team members.

From what I understand the USMC guys, service rifle class, had it wrapped up a day or two before the event was over. They really did a fantastic job!!! Congrats to these guys.

I don't have a lot of good pics from the event, cheap camera and poor photo skills,,,,that being said, here is a pic of the USMC guys with me and the chassis kits they got as part of the winners package.

Here is a pic of the Open Class winners,

I can't really find words to describe the people I met and the event,,,,
The instructors that ran the line for sponsor shoot day were top shelf too, very helpful and profesional. Gave me some very good training tips.

We should all give thanks that we have fine young men such as these helping keep us free.

How much did you have to pay to join and hang out?
