So, I was out at the range today enjoying some of the cooler weather we have had in awhile and I took my NEMO Omen out for some exercise. Omen's have a nasty habit of piercing primers (my guess, after today, is the firing pin is a touch too long)...

Well anyway, I am on my second mag and all the sudden I am rocking and rolling on full auto!

Needless to say the RO comes running over ready to toss my backside out and I told him it was a slam fire and OBVIOUSLY I was going to put the gun away... Well he was cool because he sees me there all the time and thankfully I had another toy to play with so I could finish out the afternoon...

So I get home and tear this Omen apart to find out what the heck is going on and I discovered this little piece of brass in the firing pin hole in the bolt... seems that the firing pit punched out a perfectly round piece of the primer cup and that piece got lodged in the firing pin hole and even though an omen has a spring on the firing pin to prevent it from slamming forward, obviously that spring is not strong enough and what momentum the firing pin had, added to this thin piece of the primer cup, was enough to send my Omen into full mag dump mode.

Despite the little freak out, it peppered the target, scared the heck out of the people on the range where I was shooting, gave me a bit of a rush.. But kinda twerked me off in the end, $5500 on a rifle, loads 3 grains over minimum recommended for a 190 grain pill, and this thing is perfing primers, jacking my good brass, and just giving me general hell.

Seems like every time I take this thing out something goes wrong with it and it is back in the bag.

Did you say send or sell? If I send this thing anywhere it will be back to NEMO for a tune up... I am trying to like this thing but it sure seems to hate ammo and out of the 28 I shot today, only 8 cases are reloadable, the rest are trashed from the extractor.. And they were reloads from 1x fired MK248 mod 0 brass, right off Federals match brass line.... The good stuff ya know!

GRR Argh

I picked up (just fondled, not bought) one of these today at the Cabela's in Allen TX and I was shocked at how light it was. I didn't necessarily care much for the "camo" on it but in my limited handling it seemed like a fairly solid stick. I rolled it over, and DAMN that mag well is huge!

It is a fairly solid stick, it just has some small issues.. The firing pin being too long, the magazines bulge and rounds try to pop out of them when filled to capacity, The firing pin cotter pin isn't really a cotter pin, it is a small machined pin with a forked end and mine arrived with one of sides of the forked end of the pin bent so it falls out with no tension on it, there is no tension on the forked end to hold it in place, the cam pin requires some serious prying to remove because it hits the side of the gas key, the take down pins require a mallet to remove making the rifle not very field friendly, the charge handle is a cheap cast piece as is the bolt catch...

None of it is really major stuff to fix, a good gunsmith could sort it all out... I am just pissed because I spent $5,500 on a rifle that spends more time in the bag on the range than pointed down it.

These are all things that anyone needs to consider when purchasing one.

Sorry to hear about the problems with your rifle. When you spend that much money on any rifle, you expect it to work, not need repairs. Hopefully, NEMO can take care of it for you and get your rifle working like it should.

Had the same thing happen on my GAP-10 in 6.5 CM, a primer piece wedged the firing pin and it ran away for the rest of the mag. A little surprising if you're not ready for it... :D

Just curious, what's the diameter of the firing pin and firing pin protrusion in your Omen?

I received an email from Nemo on my Omen about a free fix. I'll post it here, hope it isn't breaking any rules.

Phillip,

I've attached a letter that is going out to customers that have purchased OMEN .300 Win Mag rifles. We recently encountered a few customers rifles reporting pierced primers – not at all uncommon in the AR semi-automatic platform – ammunition including Hornady SuperFormance and Federal Fusion seem to be the most problematic on this platform.

We have a new firing pin design and spring being manufactured to resolve this potential issue. We are prepared to replace any parts damaged by pierced primers on any rifles that we receive. Most of our customers have not experienced any problems whatsoever- However, we would still like you to upgrade to this new firing pin design.

We are in the process of testing various types of ammunition and updating the manual with those types to avoid.

Please let me know the address you would like a prepaid return label sent to, you can send just the upper receiver assembly to us including the bolt carrier assembly.

Please let me know if you have any questions on this process.

We appreciate your business greatly, and look forward to hearing from you,

Best Regards,

5500 bucks and the gun comes with all those issues you described? Where do I sign up? Fuck all that noise. If I bought a gun that expensive and took it out of the box with those issues it would go back in the box and right back to the manufacturer. I can't believe you are even attempting to "deal with it". No way would I do that.

This just proves what I have been told lately by a few machinists that know what they are doing(imo and I am not in any way a machinist): "any jackass with a cnc mill and lathe can now fancy themselves a gun or silencer manufacturer even if they have no clue what they are doing".

Any new weapon system with proprietary parts and technology is going to have teething issues. Hell, the car industry consistently screws up new cars and has to do recalls as do the toy and appliance manufacturers. How hard is it to make a toaster that doesn't spontaneously combust or kids toys that aren't harmful to kids?

I am glad to see someone making something innovative and applaud them for already working on a fix and being more than willing to support their customers. Guys who buy an expensive innovative weapon system are probably already at peace with the risks involved. Those who are not should not buy it.
