I know it's anything but a fun little shooter, but I thought I would share. The optic platform that I used they also make for the PSL and Saiga / Vepr 308 guns if anyone is looking for a better optic mount .
I have been tinkering with various 5.56 AK platforms for a while and went through my parts bin and found that I had enough parts to build most of a rifle ... So with the help of a gunsmith friend we build up a range new range toy since I can't shoot my 5.45 guns at the local range due to a steel core restriction and Hornady ammo being like over 50 cents a round shipped.
Ran the rifle today for about 250 rounds with no issues today.
Here is a quick build sheet
Build Parts list
AK-74 AK builder Flat.
AK-74 side folder trunnion - mech locked open.
AK Builder AK-74 barrel in 5.56 threaded for 1/2 28 and recrowned. The gas port size was copied from a nos Bulgarian 5.56 barrel
AR-15 A2 (temp)
Modified Bulgarian AK-105 gas block
Bulgarian AK-74 trunnion / bolt / bolt carrier (Modded) / Safety and top cover / Trigger guard.
Saberwerks KOP optics platform + long rail
Arsenal Two stage trigger (polished)
Waiting on an EXPS3-4
We set this gun up to run both Polish Beryl and Arsenal 5.56 mags- This is a bit of a pain in the *** to get right.
The polish mags fit right in to the mag well of 5.45 guns with no issues but might not clear the center support on some receivers , so make sure to mill a flat clearance cut on the center support. The follower in the mag sits up a bit higher vs the Bulgarian mags and the bolt carrier will need some re profiling to make sure you don't break or damage the follower.
Up next is finishing the last two rivets, park and paint. I will also have to rezero the rifle.
