I was hunting on the edge of a field that was 900 yards long from east to west, and about 400 north to south. I was sort of shaped like a crescent. I decided to hide on the arc of the crescent so I could see the feeder 320 yards to the west and the rest of the field to the east.
I arrived at 330 pm, and found a low area I could shoot prone from, but I didn't have any foliage around me. I had the rifle on the bipod pointed toward the feeder and elevation dialed in for 320 yards (1.5 MIL) thinking the most likely place I'm gonna see a deer or hog would be at the feeder.
Every two minutes or so I would roll onto my back and glass the 600 yards to the east. At 5 pm I rolled over and was glassing left to right. In the middle of my scan my range finder had the face of a coyote at 107 yards looking directly at me. He was in the middle of the field without a bit of cover around him. I froze, he froze and sat down, like they do when they can't figure out what the hell is going on.
So after a minute I figured I'd try to move slow enough to turn the rifle around, get it to my shoulder, do a sit up a take a shot. I slowly reached for the rifle, and counted 15 clicks out of the elevation turret (for some damn reason). I slid the rifle closer, turned it sideways. He was still staring at me. I got the but to my shoulder and the fore end in my nonfiring hand restin on my belly. I raised up, doing a situp, slowly. Once I got seated he figured out he didn't want to stick around and trotted off. I tried for a shot while he was on the move but missed.
I never though I needed to practice shooting from the supine position with a rifle.
