Looking for a rangefinder to range out to 12-1400 yards on deer. This will be used mostly on flat grassy ground our flat bare ground, no backdrop other than the deer for it to come back on. I now have a Bushnell arc 1500 that does pretty good for its price but looking to upgrade to something more. What's everyones experience?

I have both. Terrapin hands down. I am sending my g7 br2 back. Yes it works good for quick shots and giving you your dope. The problem is that it does not do precise ranging. The G7 reticial is big so it's hard to know where the laser is hitting. You would not know it unless you have some other range finder to test it agains. I shoot at a 1000 yard range with steel every hundred yards. I know the 1000 yard steel is right at 1003 yards. The first time I ranged with the G7 it gave me a range of 936 then 1015 then 975. All this was done off a tripod. I could never get the same range with the G7 as with the Terrapin on any of the steel. My buddy that has the G7 has the same problem.
During our Antelope hunt it would take about 5-8 time to get the G7 to get a read back on antelope in open sage 800 yards.

I'm not aware of a commercially available LRF with tighter beam divergence. I've ranged buildings at 4500+ yards and it ranges easily out to 2500 during sunny days, I point the laser, it tells me how far the object is. The beam divergence is an important issue...
I'm going to post a link for large images here for an example. This is a house just shy of 3000 yards out, well beyond effective fire range of anything we shoot. The beam is passing between light posts, trees, shrubs, bushes even other houses in bright daylight and still reading and returning a result. I'm not getting false readings and I'm able to get a reading period because the beam is tight enough to hit and return despite the clutter in the fore and mid ground. Have a look at the images on this post and you'll see what I mean.

Looking at the BR2 myself. I would like to hear more feedback from others who have experience with this unit…..Ive heard lots of good things in other places.
I don't know about ranging out to 3000 yards, as I don't shoot live game at those distances.
For a hunting LRF setup with your ballistic info and bullet data, I don't think you can do better than the BR2.
Compensates for angle of shot, barometric pressure, temp,ect.
As far as I am concerned, the only way to improve on the BR2 would be to put the same technology into a quality bino, so you don't have to pack both on a hunt.

terrapin hands down for me, even though it is 5x zoom, the glass is great like say a Zeiss/S&B/Premier so you get a clear picture where nothing is distorted. Making range much easier
I went through this same decision 4-6months ago I even had the G7 on order then cancelled it and bought a terrapin. Biggest question is do you use Mils or MOA? Things may have changed but Last time I checked it only had all the features available in MOA and if you used Mils you were limited in what it would tell you with out having to do conversions. Now like I said they might have come out with a new version for Mils but I wasn't going to spend that kinda money to not get to use all the features and still have inferior ranging ability compared to the terrapin. So I now have a terrapin and haven't regretted the decision for a moment except when at a comp and you become the designated ranging guy for everyone else cause they trust your kit more than their own
All that being said I shoot with a few guys who use them and they use MOA and they are very accurate and give consistent accurate dope so they aren't bad just not a good fit for me

So far, the G7 BR2 has worked very well for me. To my mind, the vectronics terrapin is clearly the better rangefinder with its narrower beam divergence. However, I liked the ease with which the BR2 calculates and then gives me a firing solution. It cuts enough steps out of the process, that it tipped the scales for me. The BR2 has three different modes for calculating range. If you learn to quickly range with all three modes, even difficult targets become easy to confirm range/distance.
I have both, only use the PLRF10 now (the plrf10 and the Terrapin are very close) When you invest all the money and time into making one shot count, don't be caught in a situation where you cant get a good range on your target. This has happened to me. Had an elk about 700 yards away there was a nolle at about 4-500 with tall grass the G7 could not make it past the grass to range the target. The numbers on paper are great but in the real world there is no comparison.

Did you use both the Near & Far function modes on the elk? That has worked for me in the past when I have had cause to doubt the distance calculated in the default mode of strongest signal.
