Gain Twist, Transitional Twist Barrels

Whatever you want to call them. Gain twist, Progressive twist, Transitional Twist Barrels. How many of you have FIRST HAND experiance with these barrels on BIG-BORE rifles? I have read the posts from Augustus. Any others shooters here have any comments they wish to pass on, I would appreciate it.

Sure it is not worth the additional cost. Unless you have untold wealth and wish to piss 10's of thousands of dollars away on one off hand made projectiles and super custom barrels with experimental powders so you can get that extras .1 moa at 2,500 yards just stick with what is tried and true.

I have experience shooting a very fast gain-twist in 338 LM Improved (12 twist down to a 5.4" exit twist). Like Agustus, I got mine and use it to shoot prototype lathe turned solids. Jacketed bullets simply can't take the velocty torque combination (I know I shot a few without a break to see how they performed).

I suspect it will be another 6 months to a year or possibly 2 (absolute worst case scenario) before the person I am working with here in the US has a 6.5 caliber or longer solid that is ready for mass/public distribution. We are very close on an individual shooter basis, but the ability to meet multiple demands just takes some time. As some folks already know, waiting 9 months for a barrel is big impediment to someone entering the arena.

My time frame prediciton is just my $0.02 based on my current testing schedule (my new job has dramatically reduced my ability to get range time and do stability and accuarcy testing).

If someone has a 6.25+ caliber long projectile that has been field-tested and flight-verified for stability, I'm happy to shoot them and report how they perform in my rifle.

That is what I plan to do as well. I am planning to shoot solids and perfect a combination bullet/twist to shoot a .375 Cheytac.
I know exactly what you are talking about with ordering a new barrel. I have a barrel on order now from Krieger for shooting SMK's and it will not be finished till Oct/Nov this year. Then time to have it chambered. It would seem with this kind of demand that barrel makers would put themselves in a position to produce more barrels. As you eluded to, if barrels were produced on a more timely basis, we could trial and perfect twist/bullet combinations alot faster.
Thanks for your input on the subject. I am certain with the dedication of the shooters on this site, it will all be perfected sooner or later. Most of us just want it sooner!
