    Hey guys,

Was thinking about getting a Kestrel HUD to be mainly used at a Target Card as matches.
While searching around I found out that the Garmin 701 with GPS, AB, etc etc was about the same in terms of cost...

Would using the Garmin 701 primary as a HUD in conjunction with a Vortex Fury 5000 AB make sense?

Following...i was about to order a kestrel and saw the garmin 701. Seems like a better deal as it has AB, GPS, and is a range card for the same price as kestrel. Doesnt do wind, but a cheap weatherow will fix that...anyone have a good comparison? My brain tells me the kestrel is better for shooting, my dick tells me to buy the 701...dicks usually wrong but i like to party!

    Right,
I know where you are coming from. AB ballistics calcs will be the same that it comes from a Kestrel or Garmin.

I guess the 5700 is specifically made for shooting and the 701 is more of a Swiss knife.
Maybe the 5700 has a better battery life?

In my particular case I primarily intend on using the 701 and a large Target Card :)

I have both. Depends on what I’m doing which one I use. Just more tools in the toolbox. For a first device, I’d choose the kestrel because it has everything you need. You are likely already carrying a smartphone so GPS is taken care of.

So... would it be a waste to use the 701 as a glorified target card?
It’s about the same cost as a Kestrel HUD and I will be able to aquire target some much faster when paired with the Vortex Fury 5000 AB

Not a waste at all. It’s just slower cause you have to capture the wind from another device and manually input it. Temp also, unless you have a tempe. Kestrel has it all. Just write down the info on a wrist commander. I’ve used both in every way possible, I even have the garmin watch with AB. I like the 701 when I’m out hiking cause GPS and downloadable maps. It would be great for hunting. But I still always have the kestrel.

    I hear ya.
Yeah I was trying to see if buying a 701 would save me from writing it down 😂
But it sounds like getting accurate data to the 701 would take me more time.

    thanks!
