I have a general question. This is a very limited observation, so I may be wrong.

But i think what I am seeing is that PRS shooters, for the most part, are using Soft (Cordura) holster material. And most three gun are using Kydex.

In terms, please explain this.

Again this is an observation, and I am setting up a tac belt. I need it to be able to handle three mags of each, Double stack Pistol, 30 round AR, and three Tikka Tac mags, or three TRG 42 mags.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

If you look at the different cordura mags, you'll notice that a lot of them can be used with x,y,z magazine. TAB makes one for example that works on AICS pattern mags from 5 rounds to 10 single stack, as well as the double stack AW mags. That is that the cordura holders give you more flexibility in a market with smaller demand and relatively varied options (AICS, PMAG, AW AI mag, Accurate Mag, etc.).

In 3 gun an M4 mag is an M4 mag, is an M4 mag. With a few exceptions, you can stick any 30/40 mag into a kydex holster set up for 5.56/223 and its going to work. I imagine it's not hardly worth it for a company to make a kydex mag for a PRS gun since they're going after a small market that is using just this one specific magazine.

I could be wrong, but that's what I have taken away from it looking at various products.

Two very different sports. Speed is good in PRS, but it's the only thing that matters in 3 gun. To have fast draws with pistols or mags you need consistency which mandates stiff kydex holsters. You also have occasional hot re-holstering in 3 gun on the clock, try doing that fast with a floppy holster.
Then you have the retention systems. I'm not aware of any fast release systems for soft holsters, snaps, buttons, velcro etc. aren't going to cut it.
Retention isn't required in 3 gun but eventually you're going to see someone's pistol jump out of a holster and end their day. No one wants to be that guy.

Are you asking about kydex versus cordura for pistol holster or for magazine pouches?

For magazine pouches HSGI Tacos will give you the most versatility. Single stack or double stack mags will go in the same pistol pouches. 5.56 AR-15 mags, 7.62 AR-10 mags, AK mags, and AICS mags will all go in the same rifle mag pouches.

G-Code Scorpion mags are a similar design. They have hard shell and soft shell mag pouches but you have to get specific ones for 5.56 and 7.62 mags.

For holsters, use what’s safe. I personally don’t care for a floppy generic cordura holster. I want something made to fit my pistol.

I’d go for something with retention. Safariland ALS or SLS for example. No worry of the gun falling out or getting snagged by a sling or pack. They’re also much faster than a nylon holster.

haven't seen many if any "soft" holsters in prs, and none in 3 gun, pretty much plastic/kydex for both.

now as noted above, soft/taco mag holders are more prevalent in prs with ability to adapt to different mag sizes vs firmer kydex that fits one size only.

for the infrequent handgun stage i n prs, i will just throw on my 3 gun rig or just thread a holster on my belt, other than that any handgun-related stuff (gun, holster, mag pouches) stays off me and in my range bag. for now, just using back and cargo pockets for extra prs rifle mags.
