Couple questions about Smith and Wesson 1911s that I’m sure someone more knowledgeable than me can answer:

1) Are Smith and Wesson 1911s totally free of MIM parts?

2) Besides the external extractor, are these things consistent with 1911 Specs? (because I’m not getting a Sig 1911 because the slide profile is different from all other 1911s and it seems a royal hassle to get a holster for one with rail and light attached.)

3) Do these contain this linkage with a series 80 firing pin safety that I’ve heard so much distress about?

Thanks in advance all.

Re: General ?s about Smith and Wesson 1911s

I had the S+W 1911 and it was a great gun the only reason I got rid of it was I picked up the Blackwater Sig 1911 and it is a better shooter. My S+W had no MIM parts and the external extractor of it and the SIg is a much needed 1911 fix. By this comment you can tell I like function/reliability over being a traditoanlist. My 1911 is my carrry gun.

I have a new Garret Holster coming in for my Sig 1911vs. A kydex I had made locally. They can make all of their models for the Sig 1911 with or without the light rail. I sell them to my students for the shops concelaed carry classes and special order them at a discount for folks its top quality kit.

Both the S+W and Sig are series 80 style. I shot a 2 day Vickers 1911/Armorer course with a bunch of big name customs and my Sig had no malfunctions and all the tweaks Larry does were already done by Sig. I was amazed how many 2k plus customs had none of the tweaks and malfunctioned a lot until he did them with the owner the 2nd day

If you like a G10 grip the VZ grips with the relief for easier access to the magazine release are a great additon to an otherwise perfect pistol.

Hope the info is what you were looking for and IMHO opinion and persoanl expereince you cannot go wrong with either.

Re: General ?s about Smith and Wesson 1911s

The S&W 1911s do have some MIM parts, exactly which ones I don't recall offhand (they aren't as big of a deal as some people make, Smith make pretty good MIM). The new E-series does not have a firing pin safety, the older ones do (though it is not a series 80 but a Schwartz). As far as holster fit, slide and frame contours are basically standard-ish 1911 but there is a lot of small differences between various 1911 manufacturers and also holster makers so holster fit will vary from maker to maker and gun to gun. Should be a lot closer than the Sig though.

Bingo. That's what I'm talkin about.

Re: General ?s about Smith and Wesson 1911s

Alright, so I just went to call Smith and Wesson about 2 minutes ago, and it seems they're more or less shut down and don't wanna talk until August 15th.

So I'm hoping you guys might be able to answer some further questions. (yeah these are really BOOT questions, my apologies, but I'll just humble myself and ask ya'll rather than struggle with a Google search that keeps bringing up websites selling the gun.)

So here is the link to the particular model I am thinking about getting: Smith and Wesson

And here are another 3 questions:

1) Is this a bushingless gun?

2) Does this model have a bull barrel?

3) Along with questions #1 and #2, if I want to get a threaded barrel for this gun is this an easy thing to do? - like just order a second barrel from Smith and Wesson or what? (I've got another thread in the suppressors forum where folks have said that a bull barrel gives me more thread options cuz there's more metal to cut into.)

So thanks again in advance all. And like I've displayed, I don't know much about 1911s and appreciate the free education here.

The barrel has a bushing, and from what I have been able to discern from talking with S&W, there are a few parts like the barrel bushing, and a few internals that come from Les Baer. I would not consider the barrel a bull, but I can definitely say that mine is flawless and functions reliably. The new extractor is from the custom shop models and is standard on the E series, and is bigger and beefier than the standard SW1911. It throws the cases, and I mean throws them. The Rail will be your only issue with holster selection. As far as the barrel, talk to the custom shop at S&W. I am sure they can get you hooked up. Stinks their on vacation bro. Take a look at my thread for pictures in thtis forum, Two S&W are better than one.

Good luck!

As in more specific than just this particular model?--such that I will need it fitted to the exact 1911 that I have? (if I get this one).

Is that like a "order it directly from the manufacturer with threaded barrel included and fitted for the gun" or is that like a "just send it in later to get fitted for a barrel"?

Pardon my ignorance, I guess I need this one spelled out Barney-style.

Each and every barrel used in any 1911 must be fitted to that exact gun and is not interchangeable in any other 1911, even one made by the same manufacturer in the same assembly line.

Once fitted, a barrel is pretty much married to that slide and frame.
