Re: generic ball ammo down a high end match-grade bbl
I can say I have fired Port, Lithuanian, santa barbara, and some south american crap through factory 700P, and SPS tactical barrels. I have found that the better stuff (port, lith., and santa bar.) usually shoots surprisingly well, I have fired many 3/4 MOA groups for 5 or more shots, and a pretty good amount of 10 shot groups that were still MOA. This ammo just seems to work well in the factory twist, long throat barrels. Is it match ammo? No, it isn't precise enough to hit say 1/2 inch or so dots every time, but if you are shootng a MOA size targets then it seems to work well at 100-150 yards. Once you get out to further distances you need slightly bigger targets.I had a friends SPS tactical that was shooting Lith. into a 1 inch square with boring regularity.
I have tried the same stuff in match barrels just to see and unless you are doing position shooting like was mentioned by another poster I don't see it as beneficial. For off hand practice, and sitting if you aren't a hard holder and shoot little groups that way then I think it would be fine. Once your level of skill was up to the level of being able to clean the rapid sitting targets, I think you would need to switch to match ammo.
My opinion would be use it for factory barrels if it gives acceptable accuracy (your version of this), and try it in your match barrel if you want and again see if it gives your personal level of satisfaction. I don't use it now, except for practice with a garand or M1A at 100 yards as it just doesn't give me the level of accuracy at 200 or more. Oh I forgot it's also good for your barrel break in if you are into that, lol.
