I have one of the original Havak HP1 rifles and I'm getting the itch to customize it a bit more. I already ditched the cheap Magpul stock and put it in a KRG W3 which was a fantastic upgrade. I want to bring it to some of the multi-day field matches (Mammoth, SAC, etc) next year and thinking it would be nice to pull some weight out, so I'm considering having the barrel fluted or dimpled.
If dimples, Marvin @ Nefarious Arms is the obvious choice. I'm probably leaning this way as I love me some KAC dimples. However, if anyone has suggestions for a fluting service, I'm certainly open to hearing about them. I really don't care for the spiral fluting available on the lighter Havak PH1, so that's the reason I went with the HP1 in the first place.
After the barrel gets fluted/dimpled, it will need some sort of coating. I'd like to have it blacked out, but not sure what options are available. I don't want to do Cerakote or Gunkote. That gets scraped off with the first good rub against a barricade, even with perfect application. So I'm thinking more along the lines of nitriding or melonite. But can that be done to a barrel that's already in use? I'd prefer to leave the bore alone, if possible. It already shoots well.
Thoughts?
