I'm looking to get my first bolt action. I want a 30-06 I don't care what any one thinks about the round.
I'm looking for a Remington 700 I plan on building it up as i "grow" into the rifle.
I want to find a good heavy barrel for it possibly fluted, and possibly a muzzle break

If any one has any suggestions or advice I would be happy.

Those two statements kinda conflict eachother, a 30-06 is a fine round, perhaps if you gave some more details about your "plan" there may be some more advice.

Re: getting my first bolt action

You seem set to go... go get a 30-06 lol. Get what you want the action is more less what you will end up using after you're done with the barrel and stock.

Re: getting my first bolt action

I was wondering more about what barrels were out there. I want something that will out shoot a 308 but i don't want to spend big money on a 300 win mag or 338 lapua

What are you looking to use the rifle for?

i plan on using it as a range target gun/ hunting rifle

Re: getting my first bolt action

If you want to build it as you go just get it as an SPS model, it's a perfect playground to get a good receiver and just change the stock and barrel to whatever you want. that is what I'm doing and so far so good. Plus the SPS is a decent rifle to shoot as is. it just isn't 1,000 benchmark quality but, it can be if you put money into it.

It will probably be a long time before YOU can outshoot a .308, and its much cheaper than other options. So if your planning on a rifle you can change as you grow, you might just start there, and with the short action you will be able to step up to maybe a WSM like a 7 or 300 once you "outgrow" the .308.

Agreed! There is no way you will out-shoot a 308 with a FACTORY gun without spending more on ammo. You could possibly find a 260 which would be the cheapest ammo for a factory gun that could out-shoot a 308 IF you reload. If not, your gonna need a 300WM factory rifle. A 30-06 is a good round but for the small price difference in ammo the 300WM is far better. I also don't think they have much availability (if any) of Match ammo for 30-06 compared to a 300WM or 308. These are the other things you have to consider when looking at the caliber you want to use. If you reload then this is not a problem. I say get the 308 and re-barrel once your ready or if you aren't set on doing that, go 300WM.

Re: getting my first bolt action

if he's recommending the 300wm I'll recommend the 7mm, flat and fast ballistics with less recoil, and you don't need the 300wm punch down range on paper targets. if it's hunting the 7mm will serve you wonders also. also the ammo is cheaper then 300wm.

Re: getting my first bolt action

Are going you doing any long range hunting?
What are you looking to spend?
What are you going to hunt?
Were do you hunt?
What tipe of hunting do you do? (I.E. spot & stock or road hunt)
Out shooting a good 308 could be a costly undertaking!

The Weatherby Accumark was made in 30-06 here is one on gun broker If you are only going to shoot at deer 200 yards from you tree stand. You can buy a Remington 710 for $300.00 and buy a septate rifle for bench rest shooting.
