I've decided for some reason, not sure what that reason really is lol that I'm going to build a 458 socom or 460 alliance bolt action repeater. I have the mauser action I'm going to use,a few bare stock blanks on the way and just got a quote for a 458 socom barrel. waiting for a quote on the 460 alliance barrel, the guy building the barrels for me is looking for the reamers now.
basically I really like the round, want to be able to shoot the 300gr AP hollow points and the 327gr match grade rounds. I know its not the most practical long range gun or anything super special, but I have the mauser action, I'm getting a few stock blanks for free and the barrel will be under 250. so itl be pretty cheap, I think it will be fun and I dont have a 458.
It will give me a chance to play around with working with wood stocks and bedding and such. I'm going with a 1in zero taper 18 inch 1:14 twist barrel. Possibly fluted strictly for cosmetic reasons. I'm sure I could go with a lighter profile barrel but I want the look of the full 1 inch zero taper. and its a pretty big round so I would like to have some meat on the barrel. The muzzle will be threaded for a brake and maybe a form one can in the future.
I talked to the guys at alliance arms and they said I wont loose a whole lot of velocity out of an 18 in barrel, they usually use 12-16inch barrels and in their opinion anything over 20 would be a waste. I know its not going to be a true long range gun but I think it will pack quite a punch and be pretty accurate at close to mid range.
Anyone have any advice for this one? Is it a completely stupid Idea? I like the ability to launch a 300gr bullet with a 55gr carbide penetrater at 2000 fps and close to 2500 ftlbs of energy. I figure for the 250 that Ill have into the gun itl be a fun rifle that shoots a powerful round that I don't currently own.
Also I plan to take what I learn from this build and use one of the other walnut blanks I'm getting to build an M40ish rifle. I'm going to try build it as close to an original Vietnam M40 as possible with the only change being a 20 inch 1:8 barrel. and I wont be using the 10x unertl scope because of the cost lol. But I'm looking at some red fields like the first M40s had.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to duplicate the m40 stock? I have access to a duplicator if I could find a loaner M40 stock. Honestly these 2 guns are just going to be practice guns/learning experiences for me. Hopefully they will turn out to be good shooters. If these go well I'm going to do something similar to the M40 A5. I currently have an sps tactical 308 with a leupold MKIV, it needs a new stock though. Maybe and AICS or M5 in the future. A 700 sps in 300 win mag that is bone stock and my deer rifle, and an older beautiful 700 bdl also in 308.
