Gew 98 Sniper WW1

This is a scarce Gew98 sniper rifle from WW1, also in 8mm Mauser . Most of these rifles were destroyed after the war or reused and consumed in WW2. They are difficult to find in any condition . I have only seen a dozen or so for sale in the last 40 years. Note the metal finishing of the screw heads on the bases. Indexed screws soldered in place, are the hallmarks of German craftsmanship. Most have condition issues. The bent bolt (with armors initial at bend) bolt cutout in the stock and the new rear sight ( marked GL.V) are the changes made to the standard rifle at conversion. The receiver should also bear RC ( revisors acceptance) stamps. Scopes were offset to enable clip loading. There is only one example known that has the matching number scope still attached. The Germans produced the finest optics in the world at that time. Even the British used some of their scopes.

I had a GEW 98, but never thought about how many of them were destroyed post WWI. Probably a rarish piece in itself considering. Certainly nowhere near as rare as yours. But, at the time when the rare was mixed in with the run-of-the-mill and not many cared, a lot of history was lost.

That is a 3 power Oigee scope. While rifles are scarce, there are a number of scopes to be found on sites like eBay. You can even find them in the original canvas scope case with accessories.

Wow, nice set up! I am hoping to build a clone of one of these at some point. I have seen a couple other ways that they also locked and even numbered the base screws on these. Thanks for sharing!

Significa que el rifle fue fabricado en un Arsenal prusiano. Los ejércitos de los reinos de Prusia, Baviera, Sajonia y Wurtemberg formaron el Ejército Imperial Aleman. Cada rifle será marcado mostrando en qué Reino fue hecho.

Había tres arsenales imperiales en Prusia: Danzig, Erfurt y Spandau. Ese fusil modelo también fue fabricado por Mauser, DWM, Haenel, Sauer & Sohn, Waffenwerke Oberspree, V. Chr. Schilling Company y Simson. Cada rifle fabricado por esos nombres arsenales habría sido marcado con un águila prusiana. El marcado específico del arsenal está bajo la base del alcance en el anillo del receptor.
