Good afternoon, i have an odd ? 4 anybody that cares to answer an help me expand my knowledge. i have been doing some internet photo searching on ghillie suits as i am making one,an in the weeks of doing so i have noticed something that makes no sense, to me at any rate.
WERE IS YOUR ALLS LBE/GEAR?? were is it all once u ghillie up, as i have not seen a photo were a sniper is in ghillie AND has their equipment on.
no rucks,no LBE/vests,no gas mask..nothing..were do u all keep it when doing a stalk? I get it if u are a position, your stuff is more than likely by your feet, but i cant see you guys making a pile of your gear, ghilling up an stalking away an after taking the shot, trying to haul ass an trying to find that gear on the run,so please help me get this solved as its kind of driving me nuts.

thanks ahead of time for the info i am sure will be forth coming

Your ruck and whatever else you brought that isn't mission specific or specific to engaging/observing/recording the target or comms gear is cached at either your observation position where you have been prior to moving to the FFP or cached somewhere towards/along your planned egress route.

On a side note, ghille suits are barely ever used in the sense of what you see in movies, pictures or video games. The last time I ever used one was still in school when I thought that you basically ran around in a ghille all day. That came to a quick stop when I was told by an instructor that he can get within 400m of any target by simply using the terrain almost every time; made you really think of how you approached things rather than thinking some magic suit was going to make you invisible.

However, you do start to create camo for your AO like for example in Afghanistan, I wore a medium weight close knit nylon net with a hole cut it in for my head and the rest shaped just like a poncho; it was stained over time with everything from oil to mud and had all sorts of veg and desert brush caught in it as well as being able to add new veg/brush to it if needed. A bonus was that I was able to drape it over my chest rig harness and could access anything on it with either hand. In Kosovo I used a slip over anorak that had mag and GP pockets sewn onto the front that I painted with basically house paint that I also put on my burlap wrapped rifle.

im not a super sneaky sniper......but ive spend a good amount if time in a ghillie as i use if for duck hunting.

as said before, i almost never wear a full ghillie suit.......in early duck season, i am wearing a veil, and a top at most....most of the time just the veil....i dont wear pants because the grass is usually up to my waist anyways......plus that shit gets hot in the early season so i want as little on me as possible.

i will wear pants later in the season when we have early snow......the snow compresses a lot of the grasses so theres less cover.......also the extra warmth is nice.

as for how i carry my gear...well im just a hunter....but ive got to imagine the sniper guys do the same thing.......i carry it in a backpack because that fits in a boat easily.......then i fit what i need in my pockets (really all i need is a hand full of shells and my duck calls).....i leave my backpack at the boat, then head into the marsh and find a good spot.....go back to the boat to re-up as needed.

THANK YOU BOTH.this has been driving me nuts as i just couldn't figure it out, and ya i know Hollywierd ghillie useage an RL are WAY DIFFERENT THINGS. this ghillie is an experiment for me of sorts. i have been studying them different suits from all the different army's around the would, taking ideas from different ones, try it,see if it works,if not,GONE,if so,KEEP. I am liking the innovation i am seeing in so many suits. Honestly,i think other than the need for them IN school i think these damn things are a way to REALLY learn patience an attention to detail,VERY important things to be able to do LOL. i NEVER thought of making "screens" under the burlap on back an legs, and i did like what i saw on the Japanese,Korean,Thai ghillie suits as far as using shower curtain rings on the shoulders for foliage holding for BIGASS fonds, one can move head an the whole jacket stays put.

some of them i have seen are real jokes, the shit one can buy is $$ an so bad in some cases is scary somebody would actually buy one. just gonna have fun with it,do my best to see what i can accomplish an see what my vet buddies can see when i try it out,but that may be next summer as here in MN,snows gonna be here b4 i finish this sucker, still,i am pleased with what i have done so far an WILL be posting it in the ghillie suit are when done.

once again, THANK U LT for that info, an u too duck man :)

also, since you are building a suit......one thing EVERYONE gets wrong is how much burlap to use.

this is how much burlap i have on my suit.......and honestly im contemplating on pulling some out.....you need just enough for a base layer.....90% of your camo is going to come from natural vegetation.......plus its very light weight...even with all that shit, it weighs about as much as a good heavy weight coat........if i wanted to, i could easily fit LBE or a plate carrier over the ghillie.

if your suit looks something like this, not only are you going to roast in the thing......but if you ever get wet, you are going to weigh 4000lbs......no to mention you are going to impede movement and have a harder time blending in

Alright who gave Bigfoot the gun?

oh i SSSOOOO agree,if u look like photo 2,u r screwed an roasted alive.i am a tad smarter than them masses produced BUSH ghillies.i am taking my ghillie out of the ACTUAL snipers playbook..world wide,an ya,the too much burlap is OFTEN mentioned as a BIG ASS NO NO,30/70 is the % i keep hearing about so i will make it as i can, trim it down, add an subtract as needed till i have it as perfect as i think i can make it,go across the road after the next rain storm an play in the mud for a few hrs til its beaten the hell up,let it dry, reapply retardent,an then try it out. have many vet buddys who will have cameras to record me an i can learn from that. i REALLY HATE doing shit half assed,in real or in fun, must be the best i can be.they have been talking about bringging out the BB Guns on the second try out,(ya i have some demented friends) but if i do it right an it all comes together,i get to shoot them, not the other way,and correct me if i am wrong, but thats the goal, them b4 u. and lets be honest i am a 50 year old man,in mehe shape, been out for 25 years, watching me TRY an low crawl should be pretty damn funny to watch, especially if they shoot my ass.

funny thing is with all this stuff laying around,my mind starts to wonder an i start to think outside the box a bit, already made a scope ghillie an a rifle ghillie for my M21,,found a idea that worked well, shocked the piss out of me as i would have bet NOPE,NOT GONNA WORK. instead of useing normal burlap strips,i found some burlap decorative ribbon in green an in tan,the edges have a wire running down it,made sewing a snap, once done, pulled out the wire, so made a 3ft tube, tan on bottom, green on top, then took another 2 pieces an sewed them opposite colors an then cut in half an started pulling out the little threads, gives it a 1 inch high FRIZZ over the scope an barrel shroud.not a single strand in the action. and i dragged this through bush at the range for a bit to see,i admit,i was shocked,as i really thought i had just wasted 2 days on a wildass pipe dream, but damn me if it didnt work.

do have another ? though: what do the PROFESSIONALS use for foliage bindings? 550 cord in loops is one i heard about,i am useing black scrunchies (the ones with the cloth over the rubberband types,NOT the freaking frilly ones) that way they have some extra gripping action to hold stuff. HOW MANY AROUND THE SUIT DO I NEED TO PUT ON???? 1 per 1 inch, per 5 inches, per foot?????

also,i see pretty much EVERYBODY uses set of BDU's,not going to go that route 100%,pants BDU,top is a outer cold weather coat, minus everything inside of it,i reinforced the stitches, its lighter right off the bat, added the front piece of canvas with a yoga mat cut down under it,some for sleeves an it already has a finger holder on the damn things, used to botton the wrists,i seriously reinforced them stitches on that. did the normal with pants, canvas down legs, yoga mat under canvas and sewed netting on back of both.will be adding a camel H2O system to the inside back of jacket an cutting out areas an putting camo mosquito net patches under the netting on jacket an pants to keep heat retention as low as i can.

so PLEASE keep the suggestions coming

I use this. A little burlap and such and a lot of room for veg . Though I do have a hat that has more burlaps and grass on it when I am using a smal blind just break up the outline of my head and shoulders.

For field use I have one of those Tactical Concealment hood things. Basically a hood and 3/4 sleeves. Lighty juted. Plus I have a roughly 3x5 net lightly juted to use as a rifle/tripod wrap. So the chest rig fits under the hood thing. Plus I picked up a lumbar pack type thing from REI and spray painted it. The lumbar pack holds pruning shears, extra hair ties, 550 cord, dope cards and other stalking equipment. Plus the net wrapped up in the compression straps. So ruck and any extra equipment I don't need gets cached, Grab the lumbar pack and it's off to the races.

Look at the Velocity Systems mesh 'Basha'.

Remove the hood and thats basically what I wore over everything in Afghanistan when we were tasked with remote insertion/overwatch. Running convoys or site security, I just wore a carrier and generally didn't have a precision gun on me.

To add a bit of variety to this, I always carried my "ghillie sheet" in a satchel on the back of my webbing. For my purposes, I always considered burlap purely for stationary use (moving through the woods here in any kind of jute or netting is nigh impossible, besides audible) so by stitiching the sheet to the inside of the satchel, once you're where you need to be you can pull it over you with minimal commotion. When you need to move, it only takes a second to stuff it back in the bag or remove it entirely.

Just food for thought.
