Giraud trimmer making strange sound

I was trimming some .308 brass this morning when my Giraud trimmer started making a strange noise (I only took the plexi shield off to clean and to take the video, it is in place when I trim.). Nothing seems to be loose and the trimmer is still functioning perfectly aside from the noise. I can't tell where it is coming from. Any ideas?

I would suggest you give Doug a call on monday.

The motor is most likely the culprit, i Have not dismounted mine, but it seems to be a three phase design, one phase running of each of the two incoming wires in your socket.
And the last ran though the capacitator.

If the capacitator is done or in the end of its life, or one of the internal wiring pairs have worked loose for a bad connection.
You will normally have the motor still running with a bad noise.
Would be my first and most likely suspect.
If one of the internal wires was burned off then the noise should be constant and not like that.
If so dont run it anymore until fixed

But you can always measure the internal wiring and check the resitivity if you know how.
Same with the capacitator if you have the equipment.

The sound was very short on vid so hard to say for sure.

Have you checked the belt drive?

As the Only other possible problems i can imagine is, one of the belt drive wheels loosened, worn down belt or a bad bearing.

The drive design is simple so not many possible sources for failure.

Not sure how disassembling it will affect the warranty so most likely best to talk to Doug first.

A couple guys on another site said theirs was making a similar sound and it ended up being a bad bearing. I'll call in tomorrow morning to see what I can find out and will post back later.

Thanks for the responses.

Just spoke to the Giraud folk and confirmed that it is a bearing issue. Very helpful and very friendly. I'll be shipping the trimmer portion of the unit back for repair this week.

On a side note, I learned that I've been saying Giraud wrong. It's pronounced "Ger" (as in Germany) "oad" (as in toad) and not "Ger" (as in Germany) "odd."
