Gunsmithing Glass Bedding

Like weiser said not a big job... study up and go for it!!! I’ve done quite a few and had good luck just make sure u buff on plenty of release agent ( I like Johnson’s paste wax) and make sure u plug voids so u don’t get a mechanical lock.
 
The rear pillar is approx .30 too short from what I can tell. I guess it may need a new rear pillar. I would think McMillan would have a better inlet template than that! That's why I may just get someone to do it.

It's a Browning A-bolt and I ordered a McMillan carbon fiber stock. I'll shoot some pictures in a few.
 
After more precise measuring, the rear pillar is at least .20” too short.

It's seems harder than it really is. Prep work and clean up are the biggest PITA. Take your time with prepping. Shoe polish (release agent) everything you do NOT want the bedding material to stick to. Get some Popsicle sticks, q-tips and I use wd-40 for cleaning up the squeeze out (just spray a little bit into a solo cup and dip the q-tips). Take your time with prepping and it will turn out great. I've done 2, now. Getting better at it, but both turned out great.

The real way to tell is to measure the deflection from barrel to stock while tightening the action screws. This was my setup on a carbon barrel. Your looking for < .001 .

Usually I see one or the other having been done with more being bedded. So both would be ideal or overkill?
Usually I see both. Unless it’s a weird configuration I would do both. My ruger m77 has an angered pillar which was a total bitch to do so in that situation I wouldn’t pillar but for something with 90 degree screws I would absolutely do both in a stock.

I prefer both. Even on a mass-produced stock like a HS Precision or McMillan with a bedding block, I like to do a full bed job on it anyway to alleviate the possibility of stresses during firing.

Didn’t know McMillan had bedding blocks ?!? I’d be more worried about the stress from just torquing the action in the stock ....
