Hunting & Fishing Glassing with RRS BH40

Close to pulling the trigger on an RRS setup and Mike suggested for primarily hunting (90%glassing 10%shooting) the bh40 ballhead would work well. Anybody used one in the field for grid work with binos?

I know in general a lot of people use panheads over ballheads as they are smoother but everything I can find on them (bh40) is how smooth they are and they have a pan base already. Seems like it would work well other than not having a handle to use for moving like an Outdoorsmans. But Outdoorsmans panhead has a proprietary mount not Arca so I’m leaning away from that as I’d like to be able to glass and shoot off the same tripod.

If your mainly glassing rather than shooting you might consider a panhead that could be used as a rifle mount. Outdoorsmans just released a new version of the Jim White with ARCA https://outdoorsmans.com/products/jim-white-pan-head-2-0

I personally found a ballhead painful to use for glassing.

What ball head did you use? I hear this often but it seems most don’t have panning ability like the bh40. I’ll look at that panhead, thanks!

The ball head I used was not very high quality (the one that came with my Promaster XC525C) so with a pan it may be doable.

I know there are some ultralight hunters who use ball heads for the weight as well so it may come down to personal preference.

If you do give it a shot let us know how it works out!
