I know that you're not supposed to do this, but I read the instruction manual that came with my new S&B scope........and it mentions using glue on the lower rings when mounting the scope. I've never done this, but it must help prevent "walking" in the rings, what do you guys use?

Re: Glue for lower ring?

You can use glue I just don't see the point. If the rings are making good contact and torqued correctly the scope shouldn't walk anyway. The way I see it if you lap the rings and install the scope with a torque wrench glue should be unnecessary.

Re: Glue for lower ring?

Well here is a reply right from the horses mouth! I emailed S&B and asked them and here is what they sent back:

"Our shop uses a 3M product called ScotchKote Electrical coating (#054007-14853) which can be found at electrical supply stores. It is used to seal elc. wire connections......We find that coating the bottom of the ring prior to assembly, cleaning up the excess with acetone on a Q-tip, and allowing it to dry for 24 hrs. adds extra holding power to the rings but easily cleans up with acetone should you need to need to move the scope. The European instructions call for the use of a 2 part epoxy which is not accepted in the US market"

Re: Glue for lower ring?

two thoughts here....

i had a swaro once on a barrett...it was glued in the rings....

had a one piece mount that had the scope walking on me......i just cut some small sections out of a latex glove and layed them in the bottom rings......no more walking scope

Re: Glue for lower ring?

In the past, I've used clear silicone the same way, top and bottom of the rings.

Basically put on a very small drop, smear it around until you almost don't think any is left on the rings, thin as you can get it, then install the scope and a teeny bit will still squeeze out. Clean up.

Never figured it hurt anything and may have helped a little. When the scope gets pulled out, the silicone rubs right off.

Re: Glue for lower ring?

buddy of mine bought a new scope for his sendero. guy he bought it from used clear tape (scotch) and layed it across top & bottom of the rings. not sure why, either to help prevent marks or make sure it didnt walk. its not sticky but it may provide some traction. heck the rubber grips on my kimber are glued on.

Re: Glue for lower ring?

Also agree. Used to be call Liquid Electricians Tape by 3M. Had some problems about 20 years ago with a Gloss Leupold fixed 3x not holding on a light (9 lb) 458 Win Mag. Kept slipping the rings. This stuff works. Also can be used top and bottom, it is self leveling, and makes lapping redundant in cases of minor mis-alignment.

Good stuff....

Re: Glue for lower ring?

Buy good rings and you dont need glue.

With our rings, when you put glue or anything else on the rings you will be creating an interference fit with your scope tube. If you put a strip of tape in the bottom, and tighten down the ring caps the scope wont seat but on the tape. Keep going and you will smash the tape into the scope tube creating a dent. Thin silicone might be ok, but its going to squish to nothing in spots and extremely thin in others.
