I just have a quick question that I can’t find a definitive answer for. Do I really need a set of gauges for both .223 and 5.56? The cases are the same I know so forgive my ignorance but are the gauges different because of the cartridges’ pressure difference? Thanks

The gauges are interchangeable for the 2 calibers you listed. They are only used to determine/set headspace. Once you have determined the headspace is good (or not), you are done with the gauges. Put them away until you rebarrel or have some reason to think your headspace is no longer good.
The bullet choice, the powder charge used, the pressure created, whether you are using 5.56 or 223 ammo is 100% irrelevant as far as the gauges are concerned.

Like was mentioned, they should share the same case dimensions, the only difference being the throat design and leade angle, which wouldn't be measured by a Go/No-Go gauge. They should be interchangeable, for all intents and purposes.

Also, I like Dave Manson gauges... He builds really high-quality reamers and gauges.

He does actually list 2 separate gauges for .223 Rem, and 5.56 NATO... But might be best to call them and find out the differences. If anyone could tell you, he could.

556 NATO Go 1.4636" +.0002, No Go gauge 1.4706" -.0002, Field 1.4730" -.0002 (MIL-R-71135)

SAAMI 223 Go 1.4636" to 1.4640", No Go is somewhere in between but around 1.4670", Field 1.470"

556 Nato No Go is basically a 223 Rem Field.

556 is longer for Go if using Colt spec (1.4646").
Colt Field II is 1.4736"

OP; yeah, Manson is a good guy. Do yourself a favor, buy from him and stay away from PTG. Otherwise, there's a good chance you'll regret it.
