Going to get reloading equip. today

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

Good advice would be to buy some reloading manuals such as the Lyman, Lee and Hodgdon publications among others. Read them carefully. Read the instructions that come with your press and dies. Read the various threads here and on other reloading forums, and proceed cautiously.

That particular press seems well suited for rifle ammo but in time I think you'll be a-hankerin for a progressive press for you handgun ammo if you shoot in volume.

Without doing any research, I can't suggest only one powder for the various handgun cartridges you name.

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

I don't think that is a very good deal at all. For one thing, the Redding T7 is a better machine than the RCBS, and you could probably duplicate the package for less by shopping around a little. All the Redding equipment is better, except the 505 scale is excellent.

Actually, I don't use a turret. It is not any faster for me than a single stage press. Look at the Rock Chucker Kit or the Lee Breech Lock Challenger Kit.

For standard pistol, Bullseye, Unique, Winchester Super Target WST or Solo 1000 are good. I don't load for the 50, but slow pistol powders like H-110 or 4227 would be the ones to use.

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

Your pistol powder is going to require three different ones. Unless you want serious sub par performance from your .45 and .50.

I can't speak for the .375 Cheytac but the .308 would take RE-15 or H4895 and the .338 would maybe take RE-122, RE-25 or H1000 or IMR7828SSC maybe even Retumbo.

The point is you have a broad range of needs. It can be satisfied with one powder each but with sub par performance in one or more categories.

Edit:

And, as Queequeg said, Start with a manual.

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

+1, get a good reloading manual or 4. Read the reloading process in them. It easy to make mistakes reloading when you are starting out. It is best to go through it a few times with someone that has plenty of experience. Concentrate on the basics and load in the safe zone. Don't push it. Just because you read about some great load on the internet doesn't mean it won't cost you a new gun or more, double check everything in those manuals.
A good digital scale will save lots of time and headache. I suggest the RCBS scale then add the charge master latter, or both at once.

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

Thanks for the great input. The link was to show the product, not the price.. I understand what is being said though.

So, I would benefit from the Rockchucker kit and a digital scale to start! I think this is the way I will start. Then add pieces as I go.

Thanks

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

I use a Dillon 650 for "steel banging" ammo. Everything else is loaded on a RockChucker I bought new in 1972 in a kit. It still does a fine job.

For your sake be careful when you load the 380s. You can damage fingers real easily doing that. Because they are so short, it's difficult to hold them to put them in the shell holder.

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

picked up the rock chucker supreme master kit.
Got the trickler too!

dies, powder and much more to come!

I was told the carbide dies don't need to be lubed, is this fact?

I am starting with .45 and I am going to do it for a while before changing loads.
Where is a good site to get the majority of powders and other reloading stuff?

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

No lube with carbide for pistol cartridges, but you still have to lube with rifle cartridges.

Midway, Natchez, Powder Valley, Midsouth, Bruno's, Sinclair Int, there's a ton of them, but you'll go broke paying hazmat fees for small orders. I'd try to find a local place to buy powder and primers in small quantities, or gun shows.

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

I have had a rockchucker for yrs, hard to beat!

Make a sign that reads "Double check everything" and hang it above your bench!! Dont drink or watch tv and reload, until you have it figured out!!!!!!

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

I know the suspense is driving you nuts. But please order a Lyman's Centerfire Handloading Manual and read all the non-caliber specific chapters. Especially the chapters on safety and storage. We don't want to hear that you blew up your favorite rifle and are blind from a mistake. Everyone talks like handloading is a minor thing. But every round you make can either maim you or kill someone else.

Just do it safely.

You're probably going to make a few mistakes. Everyone does at some point. But if you know what to look for and the basic safety rules maybe the mistakes will be simple and you catch them all.

Good luck.

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

I might have missed it but while carbide pistol dies don't need to be lubed, you're just abusing your dies if you don't clean the cases first.

I've also never stuck a clean case in a carbide die, but I have stuck a couple dirty ones. That set of 9mm dies didn't last as long as I expected either.

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

Thanks noe.

It is difficult to find the powder abd brass I need here in Michigan. I knew I should have got it all at the gun show.

Seems like one site will have something but not another, which is going to drive the Hazmat costs up a lot

Re: Going to get reloading equip. today

If you do volume, you will really regret not getting a progressive reloader. I think that Hornady is still rebating 1000 bullets theirs. My Redding turret has been collecting more dust than I care to think about since I got my progressive.

If you're new to reloading a prgressive is generally going to make that learning curve extremely steep.

I really like my LnL AP from Hornady, I've had some teething issues with it, but loading larger volumes of ammo or even just sizing and priming cases for match ammo is much much nicer.
