Most county fairs are terminal for market animals. Part of the agreement that kids sign. Least thats been my experience both as a kid doing it and having my own kids do it.
Exactly. It is all in the contract. If you don't have the stomach to give them their meat goat at market time, don't raise a Boer. Get a dairy goat or something.

And the mother should be charged for every penny of taxpayer money that had to be spent to enforce the law that she willingly and knowingly broke. Will be a good life lesson for mother and child.
Been doing this stuff a long time. Load out morning is usually a tear fest for the younger ones....and a few of the older ones.
No, I read the story and I get the idea. I also think a 9 year old little girl has no business caring for an animal for months only for it to be slaughtered. It's extremely predictable that she would be very upset at the idea of slaughtering an animal she took care of for months, because she's a 9 year old little girl. It's just a horrible idea. A 12 year old or older boy is a different story.

Few years back there was an article in one of the national newspapers over here that a kindergarten class (5 year olds approx) up by the arctic circle was taken to a raindeer slaughter. Got to see everything except the actual dispatching of the animals.
life lessons. not ready for it? then do NOT fucking participate.
and the value of life. you wont see these kids throwing their meat in the garbage at dinnertime. understanding that something that wanted to live, had to die in order for that meat to be there is a very important thing to comprehend.

Perhaps.... but farm kids grow up in it, and it's one of many, and this was some random girl. I remember a buddies little brother crying over this very thing and I think he was older than 9 then. It's a normal reaction for a 9 year old girl who takes care of a single goat for months and it's a dumb idea to set it up that way with a predictable outcome . All moms fault
Then the parents should have bid on the goat.

Yeah, they should have. The whole thing is just crazy and every step is more crazy than the last . I blame mom. She knew what the deal was and yet still chose for her 9 yr old little girl to do it, then broke the rules. It does seem kind of nuts for cops to go 500 miles to get some stinky goat. (Anyone who had had goats know they only do 2 things all day and night).

Goats are a hassel and I don't eat goats so milk is the only use I have for em other than keeping things cleared, which they do pretty well. Ours would get up with the dogs and I think they thought they were dogs too. When the dogs would coming running up, you'd heat the goats behind them running up to the truck like the dogs had, but further behind.
My buddy just pulled in the drive in hs brand new Toyota pick up and we went it to have a beer. Came out and the goat was standing on the hodd, scratched it all up. Mu buddy is a big guy who worked out, hit it in the head with his fist so hard it did a back flip. Goat gets up, looks at him like "Whatcha do that for?" and jumps back on the truck. That was the last act of its life.
I have seen a goat do just like that more than once. I don't particularly like goats.
And copulate - very loudly.
