Good smith for a Mosin 91/30 mount install?

I think I may have asked this a year or so ago, but I got sidetracked with projects and who knows what.

I have a 91/30 that is an ex-sniper. I have the original PU scope and a repro PU mount from I think it was Accumounts as well as all of the hardware and drill bits.

The local smiths here I don't know very well, but from talking to a few of them I'd much rather have someone that primarily does (or has done a lot of) the 91/30 mount installs to ensure that it is correct, lines up, etc.

Anyone have any suggestions of who could do this and turn it around within a reasonable time?

I sent mine to George Tossan in Arizona. He's one of the gurus - he not only did my ex-sniper restoration, but also fine tuned it for competition in Vintage Sniper matches. He turned it for me in a few weeks.

I'm actually going to be sending him another ex-sniper to work on in a week or two.

No, after the war the Soviets had an excess number of Mosin sniper rifles. Some were refurbed and went into storage while others were "de-snipered" during refurb and turned back into standard infantry rifles.

The mount holes were plugged, welded over and then the receivers were polished. The turned-down bolts were replaced with the typical straight bolts.

A common rumor is that the Soviets de-snipered rifles that were no longer accurate or in poor condition. The reality is that you will find the same range of accuracy or condition among the remaining PU snipers ans you do with the ex-snipers. My matchPU rifle is a re-stored '42 Izhevsk ex-sniper and it is a tack driver. It has a better barrel than my original PU sniper.

Every once in awhile, someone will find an ex-sniper that still has the mount holes present. They have typically been refurbedand have had the bolt changed - which seems to indicate that someone just missed filling the holes.

Not all got returned. Here is an unissued/unfired Yugo.

Some just had the gear pulled off. Maybe for good reason as this one has the scope bracket holes at a funny angle. It may be a candidate for a long side rail mount PE.

The "long side rail" you speak of is known as a PEM . Top mounts were called PE's.

My Samco Yugoslav ex sniper had mount holes intact. Resnipered with a repro scope and mount from Accumounts. I would recommend Robertson's Restorations for his quality gun smithing skills.
