Google has failed me, here I am: "lug size" of a rifle?

I have a Remington 700 SPS Varmint. That's a 26 inch heavy barrrel, not threaded. Right-handed short action. That's all I know.

How can I tell if my receiver lug is normal size or over sized?

I ask because some aftermarket stocks say they are meant for "oversized lug" and some say nothing (so I assume those are normal lugs?).

As I'm actively trying to buy a stock I need to figure this out and all my googling turned up squat.

Be gentle!

It is going to be "normal". Oversized lugs are put in place when you get a custom barrel put on a receiver. They will be thicker and take recoil better than factory lugs. They also are machined more precisely than what you typically get on a factory lug off a remington.

The full name of what you are talking about is "recoil lug" it is the piece that is sandwiched between the barrel and the action. An oversized lug would be an option only when you did a custom re-barrel. Your factory set up is "standard".

And a stock that's inlet for an "oversized lug" can work fine for a standard lug with a proper glass bedding job.

If you want some google redemption try "badger oversized recoil lug".

So this is an upgrade, and I would have had to go get it (my rifle is 100% unfired factory...regrettably) and therefore I would know it if I had it.

Thanks very much for explaining. Should I ever get a rebarrel I will certainly look into this further.

Excellent - thank you very much for explaining. I was asking specifically in reference to the AICS stock, that's what I want to pick up if I can swing it, and I noticed two of them were listed as having an oversized lug. The biggest appeal was that no bedding was needed, the rifle sits in a v-shaped chassis and has some plastic screwed into the side for aesthetics. I am not sure if that means there would be work needed to put the rifle back into top accuracy if the stock is setup for an oversized lug or not. If the AICS is customized for an oversized lug, should I pass on that? I was trying to get away without having to worry about that part of it right now.

I run an AICS, but have never seen on specified with an oversize lug, unless someone milled it out or the standard set up can accommodate both. I really don't know. I bed some of my AICS, so its really not a big chore. If its a screaming deal, you should be OK. But I'm sure you can find a standard set up easy.

My AICS carries a Surgeon action which recoil lug looks pretty standard size.
