While I have looked at MHSA's website and checked their services, I had never done business with them nor been to their store even though I live only 42 miles south of them. Today I took a drive and ended up taking a plunge.
I currently have only one precision rifle dedicated to target and potential tactical shooting: a Rem 700 SPS-V in .308 Win, bedded in a B&C A5 stock, and equipped with a 6-24x50 Vortex PST with FFP and MoA/MOA. It has proven to be a good shooter that consistently delivers sub-0.75 MOA groups and occasionally sub-0.5 MOA. I have been considering another rifle for some time but had decided to wait...for no particular reason.
I stopped in at MHSA to look around. In thinking about alternatives, I decided that I had a lot to learn before I could wring the capabilities out of a really good custom or factory custom quality rifle (i.e., TRG22 or AI or GAP as examples). MHSA had several Rem 700 5Rs, both plain stainless and Cerakoted in .308 and .300 Win Mag and a good supply of 2nd generation AICS chassis. They had a rifle mounted in a chassis with a 20 MOA Picatinny rail; I handled it and decided, at the price point, this was a good way to go. Andy, a gunsmith at their shop, put one together for me in FDE color while I was waiting for my background check to clear. I spent some time with Randy Pennington, a fine gentleman and Vietnam veteran who owns the business, and with Adam (and also Terry, a reasonably new associate who spent a bunch of time with me as I examined all their displayed rifles), discussing optics and ended up buying a NightForce NXS C173 3.5-15x56 scope with NP-R1 reticle. As a previously mounted and soon-to-be discontinued model, Randy gave me an excellent price on it. Adam mounted it with NF 1.265" rings, leveled and bore sighted it, and I was finished 2 hours after I got there. Randy and I chatted for a bit (we're the same age) and I'm hoping to have the opportunity to shoot with him in the near future.
MHSA's inventory and ammo supply is excellent, their owner, staff and customer service even better and they made the whole experience a delightful one, setting me up with an excellent stick at an excellent price, set up just as I wanted. I'm looking forward to sighting it in and beginning my learning curve with it tomorrow. Range report and pics will follow tomorrow eve but I wanted to give the guys up there a shout out with my thanks. I recommend them with no reservations.
