Work at the Forest Circus. Seriously thinking of getting out going into teaching and working part time as a forester. I could make the same or more and actually be home and spend time with my family. Stupid shit was going on under Biden and stupid shit is still going on now. We lost some good people due to Rifs and what not but the same idiots are still around and will be for sometime. Its going to be a while until things are fixed. Not being anti Trump, just burnt out on some of the things I deal with in the FS but would not deal with in the Private sector. Grass isn't always greener. I'm ready to just work on my own, I went through licensing, I have my own equipment, I can write management plans, do tsi, mark timber, NNIS treatments ect on my own with private landowners.

I guess the big question is, if I take the deferred resignation would that screw up any chance of getting another job? I am not sure how to explain that one away during an interview. I'm assuming the right answer is to wait until a new opportunity arrives but I am not sure.

Stay put. Everything is in the shitter at the moment, if you haven’t been paying attention, and I suspect it is going to get A LOT worse. The last thing to do right now would be to swan dive into the private sector. Do what you do, collect a paycheck, watch for better opportunities, cultivate relationships.

Doom and gloom?

Oil prices are falling. Cheap energy always drives the rest of the economy up.

We're still adjusting from the 2020 craziness. We needed a recession to bring things back in line. This is a correction more than a crash.

Those of us with cash are going to start spending more. Those with investments weren't spending anyways.

Answer the op’s question, homeboy. Are you arguing for a headlong rush into some unknown private sector job as a better idea than keeping his head down in a .gov job that survived the musking? Correction, recession, depression, much needed or otherwise, call it whatever you like.

Never leave a bad job. Always move to a better opportunity. So find the better job first.

Don’t take the cash/resign until you have a firm offer in hand. So start looking, quietly.

If you are entrepreneurial, always best to start in a downturn… because then You know how to get through tough times…. Not just good ones.

In the months, years ahead, forest resources are going to be g to be opened up and managed for the economy. Not locked up to save owls and rare fungi. Private companies will need expertise and experience and people who know how to navigate the system. And manage forests. Seems like once things settle out, there will be good private sector opportunities. And forward-thinking companies are probably already staffing up. So put out some resumes? Ask around. If you get a new job and a bonus for early retirement/resign…. Then It’s a win. But have a signed offer letter in hand before you take the buyout!

I'd be leaving for greener pastures.

It sounds like the jobs are available.

It also sounds like you're scared of your own shadow. It's just a job, there's more out there. Even if you can't find a job, there's the ability to consult and bounce around as an independent contractor.

Anyone that wants to work will never be out of work. Those that are unemployed for any amount of time either lack ambition, talent, or intelligence.

I'm a procurement forester with a big corporate outfit that owns mills and land. I used to be a biometrician, but that career died with the rest of the US tech industry a year ago. I wish I could get a government job that pays as much as I make. My phone rings 5am to 9pm and I'm personally liable for anything that goes wrong while also not being allowed to make any business decision without multiple managers approving it. The grass isn't greener on the other side- I'm planning on quitting once my sign on bonus matures. At this point I'm comfortable taking a huge pay cut to contract cruise timber and not worry about people issues.
