Howdy All,
New guy here. I've been lurking for a while but just registered.
Background: Lifetime bird hunter--roughly 50 - 60 days a year chasing beaks, both upland and waterfowl. When it comes to scatter guns, I'm about as confident as it gets and I feel like my Binelli SBE 1 is an extension of my body. My wire haired dog makes me even more confident and makes me look good by doing the hard work. I am also a bow hunter, though by "hunter" I mean I hike my ### off but never seem to kill anything, though I only started bow hunting elk three seasons ago. It's madly addicting though--the first time you call in a bull so close you can hear it breathe, it's game over.
I am relatively new to rifles and killed my first elk four years ago at 275 yards with an old Savage 30-06/Burell "scope" I bought out of the local paper for $200. After that, I was hooked on big game hunting but quickly jumped into bow hunting because I have a few friends that are guides. This past year I really got into mule deer rifle hunting and shot my first buck--that really set the hook, even though he was a buzzer-beater on the last day and only a 3x3. Just as soon as I could cash my year end bonus (and after hours of research about rifles within my budget), I went out and bought a Savage Long Range Hunter in 300 WM, with a Vortex Viper scope and Rocky bipod.
I am now devoting as much time as I can (typically a couple 30 minute sessions a week) to learning to shoot properly. I am the first to admit I don't know what I'm doing and that I need help with the fundamentals. It took me one afternoon with the 300 at 250 yards to realize I needed to just stop and get busy on my mechanics, etc. with my Ruger 10-22 before applying it to the .300. I live 1/2 mile from an outdoor range and have all summer, so I figure I can afford to take my time and do it right.
I joined this forum after months of lurking simply to sponge up as much information as I can and contribute when and where I can. The bottom line is that I'm a conservative hunter--I don't "sky blast" at ducks and I sure as hell am not going to take a big game shot I'm not 100% confident with...thus, I need to build my confidence at longer ranges.
Thanks for having me and I look forward to learning.
