I don't know how to link stories but a pair of bow hunters by enis montana came across a grizzly feeding on a carcass. They yelled at the bear and it charged them. They had pistols and bear spray. One of the guys got his spray deployed. The guy who didn't get his spray going(was fumbling with safety)got mauled until his buddy sprayed the bear enough that it decided to leave. You can search for the story online. Just happened. I question why you would bother a bear feeding? I would have backed out. Also, know how to use and be confident in your spray or firearm. PRACTICE! Your don't get do overs when a bear attacks. At least there was 2 guys. Your odds of getting attacked and surviving are much worse if going solo. I don't bother carrying spray. I know I am certain that I can eliminate the threat with 14 rounds from my 460 rowland.

Not sure I would want to take on a grizzly with anything less than a 45-70 guide gun with 530 grain ammo. Nice Marlin lever in 45-70. Might be my next gun....

Unfortunately this happens every season here in Montana. It's mostly negligence and "that won't happen to me" that gets people in trouble. The area those guys are hunting is filled with grizz. Now it's also a primary horse and mule packing area for trophy elk too. The folks going in there are fully aware of that might happen but they choose to take the risk. I have packed in and seen a bear every single time I have been. THe difference is I am looking for them and happen onto the elk. Not the other way around.
