I'm collecting the parts to build an SASS type AR when I hit the house and I'm not sure how powerful a scope I should be looking at. It will mostly be used for going to the range and deer hunting in Michigan woods. I'm leaning towards a Nightforce and I have the wife the wife convinced that I NEED a Nightforce

Re: Guidelines for what power scope to choose?

The most popular configuration for hunting scopes is a 3-9x40. 9X is down at about the minimum magnification I'd be wanting for target work, and for varmints, I think I'd be more comfortable with a 4-16x40, rather a lot like the Weaver V-16.

Re: Guidelines for what power scope to choose?

I'm thinking about it being a 56mm because most of my hunting will be dark woods. I'm concerned that if I go with the 5.5-22 that it will be too much for hunting.

A 3.5-15x50 would work nice. You need to not only think about low light but think about mounting the scope and if mounting that much higher for the 56mm obj would be a problem.

Re: Guidelines for what power scope to choose?

I ran 3.5 - 10's on my hunting rigs for years. I've had to give up too many shots on fast movers in Virginia woods because all I could see through the scope was brown fur. I'm slowly switching to optics with less than 2X on the bottom end.

In the mornings I usually hunt across the fields so the bottom doesn't matter and the shots are significantly longer.

For that matter now I switch guns when I go into the woods. I'm rolling an AR-15 in 6.8SPC with a 1.5 - 6 on top for in the woods work.

Cheers,

Doc

Doc, I feel the same way. This season I'll be sporting a 3-10x44 Conquest with turrets on my bolt hunting rig. I normally hunt on about 4-6 power. If I'm hunting some of my bow stands, I'll grab my 44 mag lever gun with a 1-3 Weaver on it.

Re: Guidelines for what power scope to choose?

It all depends on the kind of rifle and intended use... a SASS clone is going to be heavy and not very conductive for fast close up shots on moving targets. I think for this use the NSX 3.5-15x50 is ideal. If you want choose the 56 mm, in an AR type the scope height of both is the same and they are almost the same size and weight.
