Picked up a well used "shooter grade" S&W 6906 from AIM. Pretty much what I expected it would be. This things filthy! Getting ready to take it down and clean it. I've got brake cleaner to spray it down with but looking for a better spray. What do YOU use?

The last time I used a cleaner was on my Ruger MK II. Don't remember what it was, but a regular gun cleaner, so like a dummy I never looked at the properties, and sprayed out my MK II. THEN I noticed the plastic grips were starting to get sticky and shiny! Didn't necessarily hurt them, and if I didn't tell them, I don't think anyone would notice, but I do. A lot shinier now than normal. Threw that stuff away and never used anything like that again.

But I really need to flush out the internals on this thing. A used gun, this one came with a set of Hogue grips instead of the original ones. Too deep for my hands so I've got an OEM set on the way. Don't care about the Hogues but I've got them off anyway. I've got the electrical cleaner and the One Shot's a good idea. Thanks

Well, that's basically for the bbl cleaning. I'm trying to clean out all the grease, oil and gunk from the internals of the pistol. Never ceases to amaze me, that when you get the bbl/slide off a semi auto handgun, how few parts there actually are in the frame. Anyway, I got everything disassembled and cleaned yesterday, now I'll lube everything today.

I use Gibbs Brand these days as it was recommended by Nighthawk Customs. Eats carbon like a champ and is very benign. First whiff tells me it's Ed's Red Dip in a spray can! Instruction were (from Nighthawk) hose the gun down with Gibb's Brand, scrub everything thoroughly, and wipe off with a microfiber cloth. I was hesitant to spray anything on a $5000.00 1911 but it was their suggestion (in writng and from their CS manager) so I gave it a go thinking they will cover any damage as they specifically recommend it. Works great and creeps nicely from a lube stand point. I ran the CAS#s and came up with Heptane, Distillates (petroleum), hydrotreated light naphthenic, Distillates (petroleum), hydrotreated heavy naphthenic, CO2, and I swear I smell (and see! Stuff is blood red) ATF in it hence my guess that is Ed's Red Dip minus the acetone. Good stuff in my book. Take the grip panels off and you should be good to go. A little synthetic oil on the frame rails after and choot the snot outta that gun!
