This one was so funny, I thought I would share it. I laughed my ass off! My buddy tells me the following story happened to him today at a gun shop in FL. His girlfriend wanted to learn to shoot, so he stops in a large indoor shooting range with a sizeable retail part. The cat behind the counter proceeds to tell him that 1- his WIFE has the worlds record shot for KILLING someone with a head shot using a .50 at 4331 yards!!!!!!!!! Then it just got stupider from there!

My buddy calls my crying laughing! Little does he know he is a career LEO guy, has been to the sandbox and train and teach firearms for the feds. My buddy plays dumb with this guy and says, "wow!!! what kinda gun." which he then proceeds to try and sell him some POS!

This is why I really try not step foot in these places! but I guess good for a laugh!

Yeah, but it's just plain rude and disrespectful. If your going to blow your head off, buy a new gun and do it in the privacy of your home. Don't go messing up a nice range with blood, brain and bone fragments.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

Should of told the "Gentlemen" to shut the fuck up!(for the record I'm not a rude guy, but this outrageous lie would force me to become the Alpha male in the situation and say my piece) Stories....blah blah blah. Some people shit the bed (lie) so much they start to believe themselves. Sad... so sad

rant off

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

I once saw a 10x Super Sniper at a gun show in Birch Run, it was formerly owned by a USMC sniper as his issue scope. Price.....$1200, as they are not available to the public.

I let him in on the SWFA secret, bought some roasted almonds and gtfo.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

In Cabelas at Christmas time, gun counter was packed. Hate some gun counter sales guys, but a few at our local store are pretty savvy, leo/mil guys. Anyways, these guys are selling like crazy, and showing guns to people left and right when some metrosexual 20 something kid walks up to the counter past shoppers and asks "you guys sell guns here?" Store goes quiet, without batting an eye, sales guy behind counter says "nope, we sell ice cream cones, would you like sprinkles on yours?" Laughed like crazy, me and my dad enjoyed that one.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

Guy goes into a gunshop and asks to look at a pistol then spends a few minutes holding it in various positions like muzzle under the chin, in his ear, under his ear and on his forehead. He then tells the clerk "I'll take this and one bullet". Clerk rings it up and the guy hands him a credit card. The clerk looks it over and says "For a transaction like this we're gonna need cash". The guy looks really put out and reaches for his wallet and says

"OK, but now I want 2 bullets"

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

ha. good one. reminds me a bit of the scene from Failure to Launch. Kind of dumb chick flick, but Zoe Dashenel buying a shotgun and "one bullet" is priceless. ...It's not a manual on how to kill a mocking bird!

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

I work in one of my local shops part time for goof off money. Had to spend about 30 minutes listening to a customer (for lack of better terminology) tell me how his grandfather used to put up an electric fence around the chicken coop and watch them electrocute themselves when it rained. (Can you hear the banjos?)

That was the longest 30 minutes of my life.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

These 2 are from this week alone!!!!

- Stopped into Dick's Sporting goods for a new .22 bore snake. I told my wife jokingly to check out the long guns to see if there is anything she likes. There was a fella and his son picking up a rifle for purchase, all I know was it was some Savage rimfire. I overhear them talking about scopes. The son asked if they were going to get a scope with "military dots" (I can only assume he meant mil dots) or a laser sight. The father then proceeds to say and I quote:
"Milly dots are worthless these days. I just wanna get a regular one that works." - while he's taking a hard look at the BSA scopes.

- Stopped by the FFL dealer to do some paperwork for an upcoming transfer. He was in his office speaking with an older gentleman when I arrived. Being polite, I waited. After about 15 minutes I interrupted to say I would come back at a better time. My FFL jumps to his feet and says "No, no we'll get you taken care of right now" and trys to show the other fella to the door. Apparently I was rescuing him from a conspiracy nut. Apparently he was going on for over an hour as to how 911 was an inside job and how this guy needs to start buying guns for when the "system fails".

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

Walked into a gun show during leave and some guy was trying to sell me a "custom" 1911. He started talking about how bad ass the pistol is and how the bullet can hit someone 200 yards away. I rack the slide back and realize the whole thing is poorly fitted, probably some guy grabbing random parts and put it together. When I released the slide it stop half way.... it went cricket cricket for about 4 seconds and then he was like, "yea man...that's like a safety feature..." I went, "seriously, dude...you seriously trying to BS that?"

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

So I've been working PT at a Range here in Raleigh for the last 10 yrs, doing sales, RO and Instruction. About 2 yrs ago, 2 gangbanger wannabe's come in. My buddy is standing there looking all professional when one ask him. "YO dawg, you got's any Deuce-Deuce or Deuce-five". My co-worker starts looking frantically through the ammo case, turns and says, "why no young man, we are all out of Deuce-Deuce and Deuce-Five, but we do have some 22 long rifle and 25 acp." Kid looked upset, so sterling tells him that the gun show will be here in a couple of weeks and he's almost sure one of the ammo tables will carry the Deuce-Deuce and probably have a box or 2 of the Deuce-five.

True story, we laughed our a$$ off when they walked out.

As for the Gun Shop stories, I could write a book and the things I've seen and heard

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

I dont think I have gotten a single non BS story out of a gun store in my life..

I think they are paid to BS. They always have to one up you and look like complete asses.. You wanna see an ass just mention the word return or rice match. That's a real treat.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

I told this one before.

Before I started doing my own gunsmithing I was at the shop picking up a rifle. This rifle is a Surgeon Scalpel wearing a USO SN-3. It is badass. A great shooting rifle. So this idiot in there looking at rifles comments on it and asks about it and about where I shoot. I told him I shoot at the local range where they have a 600 and 1000 yard line. He tells me he has a rifle that he got in Tennessee the barrel had been "sweetened" by a gunsmith up there and it will shoot a quarter at 1000 yards.
"oh really" I said, "my rifle will only shoot about 10 inches on a good day at 1000. Perhaps you should come down and shoot with us. We shoot for money sometimes"
He says OK but he never showed up with his sweetened rifle.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

The gun I used to frequent was reasonable and fair when it came to their pricing structure. I recall once many years ago, I was in there to purchase ammo. The proprietor and his father are behind the counter. A very large fella is handling a Bushmaster AR. He then attempts to haggle on the price. The proprietor calmly and clearly states that with the exception of trade ins, all sale prices are final.

The customer begins to get angry that the markup is ridiculous and everything they sell is a "rip-off". He states that he can get a similar AR made for just over $600. Still in a calm, cool manner, the proprietor cautions him on several things including proper torque values, head spacing, and difference in .223 vs 5.56x45 and the possible consequences.

The customer then exclaims: "See, there you go again trying to sell me special ammo when I've got tons of surplus at home!"

I was told he returned about a month or so later to order some P Mags....cause his others were "defective" and mysteriously blown up.

That gun would have knocked that kid on his ass. There ain't nothing in the state of South Dakota you can hunt that can't be dropped with .243. Unless you get an elk tag and even then with appropriate range and shot placement can be done. </div></div>

A peer (not what I would call a friend) went to buy a .223 or 22-250 for varmint/coyote hunting here in IL. He got talked into buying a .270 by the store clerk because "it'll take down a deer". I was impressed with the clerk's salesmanship considering you can't hunt deer in IL with a rifle (not counting muzzle loader).

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

Not a gun shop story, but I was at a local competition with the AR10 when it was brand new. I didn't even have dope for it yet, but the local comps are only $5.

So I setup on the end of the firing line so as not to irritate anyone with the braked barrel. The kid next to me has an iron sighted M1A. It was a really slick rifle.

For whatever reason there were a number of spectators. One was a crusty, Vietnam era vet. I have nothing but respect for these guys, but I think some of them have told their stories so many times that they forget where the reality ends and the BS starts.

He starts by oogling the M1A, which is natural. He talks to the kid about "when I carried one", etc. Then he looks with disgust at my AR10. He then proceeds to tell me how much of a piece of crap those rifles are. I lost count of how many times I told him it was NOT an AR15 or M16 and that nothing in MY rifle was like anything in an original M16. It wasn't even the same caliber. He just went on and on about M16's blowing up, jamming, etc.

Of course I will give him credit for being helpful. On one of the stages he realized I kept eating HOT brass from the M1A and stood between us as a brass deflector. I actually came away with a couple of burns from that thing.

Then of course there was the guy at the Gunshow who attempted to convince me that a Dragunov SVD was the most accurate Sniper Rifle in the world. I found this extremely funny since I had just come back from overseas where I had spent some time behind an issued SVD.

Many of the others I have purged for fear they would corrupt the good brain cells.

I would like to compile some of the better gunshop tales and post them up on the website. Maybe it would make a point....but probably not. I have gotten to the point that unless they are posing as a "special operator" I don't confront them.

I also try not to bring my rifle into the gun shop. It's a magnet for stupid stories about "snipers" and "sniper rifles".

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

Different venue....same BS. Sitting in my patrol car doing a directed patrol. Officer pulls up and we start a conversation on patrol rifles. He states he has also had 160 hours of "Sniper Training" and can't understand why the department won't put him on SWAT. I ask what kind of rifle do you shoot....oh a Remingtom 700 in 300 RUM. Custom barrel...no the rifle is a stock gun... Said to finish the course and qualify, he had to hit a coke can at 1K on his first shot. I said a cold bore shot at 1K at a coke can? Sure! Must be handloaded ammo...no, got it off the shelf, factory ammo. I said really....did you qualify....oh yeah. No problem at all. Shook my head and drove away! What a D/A!

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

I was in a shop once, and a guy brought in a new line of rifles he was producing. He wanted to sell some to the shop. He was showing it to a few people. One of the employees got over to them pretty quick for a chamber check. The guys says I have a snap cap in there, so no biggie. Well the employee racks the action and out drops a live .338 Lapua round. So close to having an ND. It was only a matter of time before he wanted someone to "feel how good the trigger is."

Scariest moment I ever had being at the store.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

I drop by this little local shop from time to time to pick up ammo etc, luckily I wasn`t there when the following happened a couple of months ago (as I probably would have done something stupid to the schmuck...) but got the story, it was also in the local paper.

Guy comes in with a bagged rifle he wants them to look at, the guy behind the counter proceed to extract the weapon from the bag and boom, shoots straight through the counter top, out the side of the counter and finally the bullet stops in the outer layer of the laminated security window towards main street...
It never became quite clear if the guy behind the counter actually pulled the trigger without checking it first or if it went off by accident, but the other guy lost his weapon license (at least temporarily) pretty damn quick...

The same thing happened next two me three times at gunshows. Once a vendor handed my buddy a bullpup 12 gauge and told him to check it out. My buddy pointed it at the celiing, thought for a moment and checked the action... yep a big fat 00 buck round popped out. And the last time it happened, the guy next to me put a .223 hole in the ceiling ( needless to say he didn't check the action) man that got everyone's attention, my ears rang all day.

Morons.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

When I picked up my AIAW from the transfer, I checked to make sure all the accessories were present. Another customer was able to sneak a look at my coveted rig. He asked what kind of scope I was going to get for it. I said I had a Schmidt & Bender ready to go.

His reply:

"What you ought to do is get ya something like a 'LEO-polled' scope for it"

I responded "why?" and walked out before he could respond.

I think if him every time I read a Leupold thread here.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

I was working at the fun store, and a guy comes in looking to shoot, I take his money, give him his targets and hangers. As with all customers I ask to please leave your weapon cased until you are in the range and in your stall. well I start ringing up someone else for the range and I see this guy un-casing his 1911 and before I can get the words out of my mouth, he discharges a round into the exterior wall and into the range (thank god it was empty). He puts the gun down and said his gun "went off all by its own". I not so politely ask him to leave. Before he leaves I grab the big sharpie marker put a circle around the hole and have him sign his name... turns our he was a cop so I had him leave his badge number too!

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

What I find comical is how many Gun Shop employees become "Rambo". They strut around wearing a side-arm and just act like they are "all that". I generally stay away from the type but once in a while you can't help but get trapped by one.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

one of my partners is like that he is just a little guy! its funny he claims to be rely into guns as soon as he turned 21 he ran out and and got his permit. he carries every where he gos now he carries a judge, an AR, AND his ruger .380 at all times. i had to show him how to clean his AR and i had to show him how to take down and clean his mini 14. this guy is like 5'5" and 120lbs. and he talks so muck about his guns that most people don't like being around him. one time i over heard him telling some people how he had to pick up the front of his girls car and move it by hand. "seriously" to this day we still laugh about that must be small man syndrome or something.

Carrying there isn't an affectation. It's basic prudence. I'm frankly shocked by this sort of comment in this sort of forum.

The earliest Glock TupperWare containers required the striker spring to be released prior to boxing; the post in the box pressed the trigger to the rear. Presumably this was to ensure that no way, no how could a loaded gun get shipped.

After a few boxes wound up like this, complaints yielded the Gen II box, that didn't release the trigger.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

No bullshit, this happened this afternoon. I've been jonesing to do some serious pistol shooting since I relocated up to the suburban DC area (my first big mistake). I spent the last couple days cranking out copious amounts of 40 and 45.

I head over to one of the only ranges in the county (everything else was over 45 minutes without traffic). I walk into the range with my ammo and targets in my backpack, my two pistols in a locked hard case. The guy proceeds to tell me that I can't shoot unless I pay a $30 "weekly trial", or get a $60 monthly membership. What's worse, I'd also have to purchase all my ammo from them. Looking at the 45 and 40 plinking ammo behind the counter, it would have cost me nearly $200 to shoot if I'd I bought ammo from them. The 45 was over $25/per 50, and the 40 was a tad less. Ridiculous.

I swore to myself that once things get settled, I'm moving to northern Virginia.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

I promise this will be one of my last ones, fellas.

I went with a friend to an gun store/range in northern IL for shits and grins. While walking around, A man brought in a Mini 14 in the hopes of selling or trading it. When he opens the case, there is a mag in the gun. He removes the mag and it turns out to be empty...stupid. He then starts laying out all the accessories. I hear "oh....still loaded." One of the mags still had .223 in it. No one really seemed to care.

Shortly after, my friend and I rented some Desert Eagles out of morbid curiosity and went to the range. A mediocre range experience.

After finishing up, I wanted to take one final look around. At the gun counter, 2 employees are eying a gun recently traded/purchased from a customer. These boys are college age or a little older. They're laughing and waving this thing around and flagging everyone in the joint. The last thing I see is one of these guys pointing this pistol up toward the ceiling and going "boom, boom".

Class and professionalism all the way.

Oh... I think I understand. You must be a Bad-ass. Carrying a side-arm isn't the issue. The fake tough-guy attitude that sometimes goes along with it is where the issue lies. Frankly I'm shocked that someone on this sort of forum isn't savvy enough to figure that out

I love reading these stories so much.

I need to ask the guys who work at Impact, to get on here and post some stories. I'm 99% sure they've got some hilarious ones

Also, Ninja Pirtle, your sig made me lose track for several minutes...

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

I guess I'm one of the guys with stories from behind the counter.
The ATF was in doing their inspection behind the counter when a customer ask about barrels for the Encore . I explain that if he buys a pistol barrel he needs a pistol grip to go with it. He blows me off saying he does what the f--k he wants f--k them mother f--kers. I just look at the agent and he shakes his head.
Later two younger guys are looking at pistols . They are going off in slang Yo dude check this shit out Yo dude check this man . The one then said Yo man I like this one but you would have to buy it for me . They never took it further but were this close to getting a ride.
These people make a uncomfortable time a little more uncomfortable.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

No bad ass here, your basic quiche eater, wear sandals sometimes, too.
I agree about posturing. 20 years ago at gunshows it was supposed vets "looking for work, now that the African conflicts have cooled off". Today's mall ninjas.

There is a guy on the board that always seems to read a post of mine right when his wife walks in, so you aren't the only one. My apologies about the wife.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

Yeah, I lied....i'm not done.

Some years ago, I bought my first AR15. A friend told me that there was a guy in the next town over who has his FFL. I thought "wow, how convenient".

The AR15 I bought was a Colt Match target with a C-More red dot/rear sight combo. The seller specified he would ship the red dot sight in its padded box separate from the rifle. When I go to pick of the rifle when it arrives at the FFL, the rifle is fully assembled, sight too. The FFL said: "She's all sighted in for ya." I was not pleased to hear this, but I didn't make it an issue.

A few years later, I heard he didn't renew his FFL. He had in issue with a customer. Apparently, someone was transferring a NIB S&W model 19. When the buyer took delivery, he noticed the barrel was cracked and it had been fired, shit ensued. After some back-tracking and speaking with the original seller, the FFL was cornered and admitted to firing the gun with some of his "custom loads".

Last time I saw him he actually had a booth at a gun show....with his wife......selling Beany Baby knock-offs.

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

I have a good place for transfers now, but I had to try several local shops before finding one that didn't PO me immediately.

Probably around 2003 or 2004 when the DPMS had just come out with their AP4 308, I had one shipped to a local gunshop to transfer. I went to pick the rifle up, and upon unboxing the rifle the clerk commented that they had several of these same rifles in stock. I made the comment that I was pretty sure they didn't as this was a 308 not a 5.56, and he said "oh no, we don't sell those, they are too loud".

Re: Gun shop stories!!!!

more of a range story.

Guy at the range had a TRG-42, TRG rails, TRG rings, TRG bipod... had it all through some sort of claim.

All good, nice rifle in .300 WinMag.

Mounted a Center-Point scope on it he got for $400...
Was talking and 'wasnt sure what he should buy next, a Remmy 7615 or a IAC-12G shotgun'
I suggested a Nightforce scope?
