Gunsmithing Gun Smith in Denver

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

TJs did a good job on threading a barrel for me. (And it was boresighted within a MOA or two when I got it back.) BP Tactical has a good reputation too.

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

Mark Chanlyn, owner of Rocky Mtn riflewerkz in longmont. Top shelf all the way. If I needed work he'd be at the top of a very very short list.

Ol boy from bighorn actions is another one tied for 1st as well.

Can't go wrong with either.

Avoid anything named "Hi Tech". I worked for that guy once. Creepy. . .

Good luck!

C.

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

As Chad said- Mark Chanlyn is an incredibly talented and knowledgeable local asset for precision work-

What kind of work are you looking to have done?

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

I live in NY and my rifles are built by Mark Chanlynn, one of the best kept secrets in the barrel business. He's doing another barreled action for me in the next month or so.

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

I clicked on this thread because I knew that there would be a Gunsmoke recommendation. I was looking at their "Gunsmithing" "services". $45 for a recoil pad, not cut. Seriously? Is the cost of the pad included? Or is that just the charge for a couple of screws and the tubby fella to sit and stare at it for a few hours?

Now that is just sick....................but I'm in on a group buy of the prints.

Hey....this junk don't pay for itself!

With prices like $50 to adjust an adjustable trigger, $45 to install sling studs, $35 for a safety check, and $25 for a test firing....

I am curious about one thing... how does one install only a muzzle? Their price list includes 'Install muzzle - $75.' Maybe I just don't understand, since I'm not a part of 'the largest and most experienced group of gunsmiths in the state.' (Their words, not mine.)

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

A couple of friends have had some really nice work done by Bert at BP Tactical.

I know of him more from the AR side of things, but his work is good, fees are reasonable, and customer service is significantly better than... *those guys*

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

Mark will build rifles. I have a pre-64 model 70 on the way there now for a going over and a 6.5x55 tube screwed on. PM enroute with contact information..

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

I dont believe Mark's business [Rocky Mountain Rifle Works] has a website any longer, but his contact information is still available on the web. Yes, he will build a rifle from the ground up, and his work is second to none!

Also, take a look at the actions made by Big Horn Arms (designed and manufactured by AJ Goddard and Mark Chanlynn) - that action coupled with one of Mark's barrels is argumentatively the BEST money can buy!!

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

I was looking for someone to thread a barrel for me and put on a muzzle brake. Want someone competent, and I don't feel the local TV stars are even remotely qualified.

My .300WM that I've posted on here is just that, Bighorn action and the rest of the work done by Mark. This rifle is my go to tool.

We would be happy to take care of it for you!

Good evening all, I would like to thank those of you that tossed my hat into the ring.
Long time lurker, infrequent poster.
There are some real artists of the craft here and this is a great resource.
In Colorado as far as precision rifle builders Big Horn and GreTan are hard to beat.
I would love to be thought of in the same context as them but I just dont have the expertise in precision rifles that they do.
We are getting there however, slowly but surely.
Military pattern rifles and pistol work is where the majority of my business lay as well as precision in house machining services.
One of our strongest areas is in our machining capabilities. Threading barrels is one of the most requested services we offer.
All threading is single pointed and all turning, crowning and threading is indexed to the bore so you can be assured your threads are concentric and axially aligned to the bore.
Reasonably priced and with an above average turnaround time as well.
Please keep us in mind.
Thanks

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

+1000 on Mark Chanlynn He put a custom 24" barrel on my Mega build and assembled it for me. He took a lot of time with me discussing all the options I wanted and needed vs what was hype and forum bull. Then he gave me some great advise on reloading for my new rifle. I had approached several other gunsmiths in the area with questions regarding my build and getting a price for the barrel. Those that returned my calls or took the time to talk with me about it made me feel like I was wasting their time and didn't seem interested in my business. It was a pleasure dealing with Mark and as soon as get the money put together I will be having him build a bolt action stick for me as well.

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

Just to be clear Bighorn Arms does not do gunsmithing. We build rifle actions. I do send quite a few people to Mark Chanlynn @ Rocky Mountain Rifle Works as he is a good friend and awesome builder. But Dave Sullivan @ West Wind Rifles is one heck of a builder also and I have personally used him myself. I have also seen Fritz's work @ TJ's Gunsmithing, It's top notch. I've heard from many people who have had rifles done by Greg Tannel @ GreTan Riles that were quite pleased. We are blessed here on the front range to have a number of competent smiths to choose from.

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

I think GreTan moved his operation to the other side of the divide...

Great smith, last time I checked his wait list was around 12 months on a full build when I was sending all the parts.

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

I would caution using them( TJ's gunsmithing). Placed a deposit on a build 10 months ago (quoted 6-8 months), anyway I went to inquire about the status at 8 months and they said waiting on a barrel. Went to their location again last weekend and was told waiting on a barrel and the stock(9.5 months later). I pointed out that McMillan's website quotes 12-14 weeks for a stock and krieger barrels is quoting 20-24 weeks for 30 cal + barrels, and additionally I had already received two fluted barrels from kreiger in novemeber(ordered at the same time as the build). They became standoffish about the timeframe for my build...

Re: Gun Smith in Denver

I have Dave Sullivan at West Wind Rifles in Erie, CO do all my work. Great smith and great guy to work with. He chambered/cut a Bartlein for me, installed a brake, installed a DBM, trued and bedded my action. Highly recommended!
