Rifle Scopes guys i need help with my vortex

hey guys im new to the sport of lrp. well i was running a millet LRP with a 20moa base on my remington 700 in its XLR chassis with no issues but i decided to upgrade my glass to a vortex 6-24x50 ffp i put on and at 100yds with the scope bottomed out im exactly 4mils hight which would give me like a six hundred yard zero im trying to figure out if anyone has had this problem or what i should do. i never removed the rings or the base the gun never came out of the stock the only thing that has changed is the scope oh and there is only about an 1/8 gap or less between the end of the scope and the hand guard. I did check and the total mrads of travel are there i just cant go any lower and it has me scratching my head. Any ideas would be appreciated
 
The only thing I can say off hand is - perhaps you over-torqued the scope rings? I believe Vortex recommends 10-15 in-lb.

In any case, Vortex has an excellent customer service. Give them a call ASAP, and they're very likely to help you.
 
You don't have the zero stop shims installed do you? They would definitely mess up your ability to go down.

Oops! This should've been my first thought. Absolutely, check for the shims!

I guess I'm so used to my Razor and its zero-stop mechanism that I completely forgot that PST does it differently.
 
Depending on his old Millet, it could have had a lot more internal adjustment than the 6-24x50 PST. I wouldn't completely rule out something being misaligned with the rings/base. Not trying to offend you at all, but the 20 MOA base is pointing the scope down towards the barrel?
 
i have the rings torqued to 20inlb. there is no shims i ran it down and pulled the cap the erector assembly is all the way down and touching. Yes the 20moa base points the scope towards the barrel but thats to put your zero closer to the top of your elevation giving you more overall travel. even thought the turret says up your actually moving the cross hair down. please correct me if im wrong like i said im new but that is my understanding. I checked the millet and it has 24.5 mils of adjustment and the zero was almost at the bottom of the travel "within a mil " and the pst only has 19 so doing the math thats my problem i lost 5.5 mils switching scopes and thats whats killing the zero RIGHT im totally guessing now if i screwed something up please tell me i get on a roll and screw crap up sometimes. so my solution would to remove the 20moa base for a zero base giving me 20in or 5.82mrad of difference at 100yd putting me back in the zero zone since i was 4mils high at 100
 
I would just call vortex, there are a lot of 20MOA bases out there with PSTs on them. This should not be the problem. Get the problem fixed from the manufacture because who knows what else could be a problem in the future if the tracking is off that much before you have it zero'd.

I think you're over-torquing the rings by half. IMHO 12 in-lb is enough (and you're not putting it on top of a 50 BMG gun).

Despite that, Vortex would repair it under warranty (life-time) regardless of the cause.

my griffin armament e-tac rings said to torque to 18 inch pounds. hope i didnt hurt my pst scope. hopefully you get this figured out! sorry i dont have anymore advice for ya then whats already been giving. vortex will get ya taken care of if somethings not right

I would go with the scope manufacturer word rather than that of the ring maker.

Yup... And when they answer your question about the correct scope ring torque for PST - feel free to post it here, so we all can stop guessing. ;)

I think mouse is telling you the right torque.

Go with the values Vortex tells you,(even less if using loctite) not the value from the ring manufacturer . Vortex are squishy. Over tightening them will make the controls sticky and probably fudge them up. If the paralax knob does not turn smooth through the whole range, it's too tight. Ask me how I know:eek:

If you use loctite and 20inch lbs, I believe you may be crushing that thing. Not sure if it will fix the problem, but it's good stuff to know.

That doesn't sound right.

A 20MOA base should add about 7mils to a 100 yard zero. Your millet should have had about 4-5 mils and your PST should still have 2-3.

have you tried it with a regular 0MOA mount? I wonder if it's 30MOA and not 20.

edit: basically with a 0MOA mount and your PST (assuming it has 19mils exactly) zeroed at 100 you should end up with about 8.5 mils of 'up'. So then you stick your 20MOA mount on and you have ~15 mils of 'up'. That is how it should work give or take. You should not be bottoming out a scope with 20mils of internal adjustment by sticking it in a mount with 6.5mils of forward cant unless something else is going on.

the griffin armament rings are a zero gap ring. i was thinking maybe the torque values were more because of that ( not allowing to over tighten without affecting the rings themselves) I may contact vortex and see what the say. i might add the griffin rings are top quaility. the fit and finish is outstanding, if anyones looking for rings dont over look these. i couldnt find many reviews but the ones i did see were all positive.
 
Yep I have zero gap rings. I loosened them up to 12inlb after I removed the rings and base and torqued everything with the same result. I don't have a zero base but that's what myself and the guy I talked to at vortex decided was the next course of action. Nothing feels sluggish the parallax moves nice with no binding and the retical move perfect with no sticking.
