Argh! Frustrating!

I'm playing with 165g Nosler BTs and H4895 powder out of a 308 Winchester (Remington SPS-T) whose barrel has been cut to 18". It's going to be my hunting load.

I started out testing near maximum loads (43.5g) per Hodgdon's site. Today I completed my third test, and have quite literally blown right past their recommended charge weights. Today I tested 45.8 grains with absolutely no pressure signs. I'm thinking about going higher as my velocity is still under 2700 fps, accuracy is mediocre, and ES is also very high (~30 fps). It has been my experience that accuracy and extreme spreads start looking better near maximum case capacities.

I understand that most reloading manuals are conservative. I also know I have a short barrel. That's one of the reasons I went with H4895 instead of Varget. I'm just having second thoughts about going much higher in charge weight. I loaded more rounds tonight, all the way up to 47.0 grains. Yes, my last three charge weights are compressed.

Do you think what I'm experiencing is normal considering my configuration, or is there an outside chance that this powder is unusual? I'd sure hate to develop a load with an extreme charge weight only to buy another lot of powder and blow my face off! No, this powder isn't that old, and has been stored properly.

Just looking for some feedback on what I might consider doing.

Other relevant info;

- New, Winchester cases
- CCI BR2 primers
- loaded to AICS mag-length
- Testing environment hasn't exceeded 50F (it's still cold in Michigan!)

Are you more concerned about speed or accuracy? I've used H4895 in 308 Win, 243 Win and 223Rem. However, I was shooting out of a 26 inch barrel. Never worked for me unless I wanted to do reduced loads for the 243 Win. Was hoping to use it more because it meters great.

glock I have an old manual it list 48grs of H4895 as max. I think you are still save even at 47grs. I really think the new books leave alot to be disired.

Disclaimeer:This information is out of the
Hodgdons no.20 manual. Use at your own risk.

Thanks guys.

- Accuracy first, but I am more interested in speed with this particular load due to the fact that it's a hunting round. I figured H4895 was a good choice because Varget worked so well from the same barrel when it was 20" long, albeit 175g SMKs

- Glad to hear someone, at some point has used higher charge weights of H4895. That makes me feel better

Did it shoot well at any charge weight? Perhaps your gun doesn't like that bullet @ that length. When trying to get 130 VLDs to shoot in my 260 distance from lands was the all important factor, charge weight made relatively little difference. But the 139 Scenars shoot great no matter what length I load to.

Re: H4895 . . . is this load too hot? Help!

You might want to consider a slightly faster powder such as IMR-3031. I recently did load development for my M1A scout (18") and found that it wasn't liking any of my IMR-4895 loads for my standard M1A( 22"). I started with 39.0grs of IMR-3031 (in LC brass) and worked up to 41.3. Real nice accuracy node around 39.6gr with 168's. It might not get you to the velocity you're looking for though.

I hear ya guys.

I ran tests up to 47.0 grains today. No pressure signs. I can't believe it.

Nonetheless, after reviewing my entire portfolio, I'm going to go back to OCW nodes at 44.6 and 45.8 grains for final tuning with seating depth. These are 2600 and 2675 fps respectively. I got as high as 2750 fps, but POI was highly unstable.

If I can't tune these two lower nodes, I'm moving on to another powder or bullet

Thanks again.
