Rangefinders... I’m having a hard time justifying a new one because all of the local matches give you the range to the target. Also, my home range is a KD range with butts and firing berms so I always know how far I’m shooting. As far as hunting, my 12 yr old Leupold LRF will range animals within the envelope I’m comfortable taking a shot on a live animal.

Anybody else have this “problem”? lol

edit: if someone had space to start hosting field matches in Louisiana, I’d have bought one yesterday

This is not a problem. With the expense of quality range finders, I will gladly let the MD tell me the range to target. And while hunting, if my Nikon Prostaff can't give me a range, it is way too far anyway.

I do a fair amount of shooting in new and different locations. During the late spring, summer and early fall, I go to a few select spots in the Sierras, and scout new locations each year. After the first rain of the season (which by definition means the Sierras are out), some BLM land a couple hours south opens back up to vehicle traffic and I go down there. I use a rangefinder quite a bit when I'm out and about, and my needs in this regard have been steadily getting more stringent as my ability to stretch the legs on my rifles as gotten better.

I have a Nikon Black 4k right now, which is a hell of a rangefinder for the money, but getting a reading off some foliage at longer ranges can be problematic. Sage brush causes all sorts of problems past about 1200. Normal greenery will get me maybe 1500. Rocks usually a bit more. In a lot of cases I have to get part way between target and shooting location and range in two directions.

Long way to say...

Like you, I really would like a more capable unit, but I have way too many other things higher on my list. Like a better spotting scope, but I have way too many things higher on my list. Like a...

It just goes on and on and on and on...

You’d be surprised how often the given ranges at matches are a bit off.
I’ve never missed at a match and wondered why. Every time was all me, so it’s never been enough to affect me at the local matches I attend. You’re going to have a variance with different LRFs too so I’m not sweating it

.......sounds like you didn’t need this thread to make your mind up then.

i wanted the independence of being able to do everything myself with nothing given.
besides, i didn't take this up to shoot targets at the range with known distances.
for me, this was for serious stuff, like zombies.

I'm getting ready to dial in a new 338 Edge. A local mom & pop gun store has some H1000 in stock. I went over today to buy a 1lb can to see how it compares to Retumbo. To my surprise they had 4 bags of new in the bag RP 300 RUM brass. I asked the guy if was being made available to the reloader again. He said no, we had some stashed in the back and threw it on the shelf. I walked out with an 8lb jug and the 4 bags of brass. Spent $435 when I was thinking it would be a $30 purchase...

i'm waffling on buying an expensive tripod, even though i don't compete, or hunt with a rifle. i just want one, for zombies.
i could get buy with a moderately priced one for the spotting scope, maybe with a geared head for aiming ease.
but but but...

No.

And to further the discussion, I shoot on KD ranges too. However, I have learned to trust, but verify. You might be surprised how many edits you can make to a match book.

If you get into the PRS rimfire game, I would say they are critical. Being off by 3yds at 150 is a deal breaker.

Just posing the question. Is anybody else in a similar conundrum?

do you want help rationalizing the purchase when you have no real immediate need?

i don't know how much you have spent on all your shooting stuff and your rifle, but if you can only hit shit when people tell you how far away it is, what good will it be when zombies appear on the horizon. :p

a long range rifle on its own, without the ability to calculate dope without help, is not much more than an expensive range toy that can cost hundreds of dollars to play with for a few hours.

a long range rifle and the ability to calculate dope and make first round hits is a highly valuable asset to augment your options for self defense in a disaster or emergency (shtf) situation. instead of a toy, it might be the only way to effectively feed or defend your family when ethical hunting takes a back seat to survival.

need more?

I’ve been convinced to get the fucking rangefinder! ?

The plan was to always add it to my kit but that is some good perspective.

that is at least partially how i justified it.
my wife was ok with it when i spent $4k on a Scar 20S.
but it would have been a waste of money if i couldn't hit shit :ROFLMAO:

i didn't already have one, or a kestrel, so i got a sig2400abs to see if an all-in-one would work for me.
first round hits on anything i've tried out to over 600 yards so far.
