How many guys on here hunt deer hardcore or basically without a treestand or blind? What kind of insight could you give a new deer hunter on hunting hardcore.

Nothing about deer hunting is hard core unless you get up north and most of that takes place after you pull the trigger. Find you a food source: acorns, wheat field, corn field, etc. If you can't find a food source, find a trail to a food source. Find a tree, sit down and wait. Way more productive than walking around.

Depends on how much pressure the area you hunt is getting .If there isn't a lot of people in the area you can hike a ways until you find a likely spot and then sit and watch it for a while then hike some more . Most places we hunt anymore get so much traffic that your better off to hike into a position before dawn , sit down and let everyone else drive the animals around . After hunting the same area for several years we are slowly accumulating the spots we can hike into pre-dawn and then wait .

I was goin to try just staking out in a prone position from 300 to 500 yds in a cut corn field behind my house. Ive glassed a couple of good 8 pointers and was goin to use a ghillie in the middle of the field. Nobody else hunts this 80 acres so pressure isnt a real concern.

Ghillie? Errr.... TN doesn't require orange when hunting with a rifle?

If by hardcore you mean, spending all day without going back to the truck, cabin or taking a nap. yeah sure no sweat. If by hardcore you mean still hunting and area you've scouted and deer you've patterned. Yeah sure...
Sounds more like you wanna play spec op deer killer. Not many hardcore deer hunters would break cover into the middle of a cut field.

Eighty acres can be covered very simply by positioning yourself on the edge of a field. If your field is a half mile long, park yourself halfway down that should cover it. Use the opposite edge the deer are using. It keeps your scent out of the area. Ghillie suit- no orange- illegal and a good way to get shot. Someone will mistake you for a hog or something. CRAZY!

Haha! I sense there was a hint of humor in this question. Guys..Im well aware of the laws and rules for hunting. Of course I would have some type of orange on and also plan on carrying a tall orange flag to stick in the ground next to the spot where I lay. People around here call hunting without a blind or stand Hardcore Hunting. I guess my open ended question got me in trouble on this one. Yes, Ive glassed two good bucks and yes I plan on taking them down at a range of 3 to 500 yds. Yes, I already know where my postition will be and yes, my directional postition is safe to shoot.

I guess it depends on what you call hardcore. I'll lay out prone in a heart beat to tag some deer close in or far out. I'll wear the normal hunting camo, so nothing hardcore there.
I'd call hard core hunting from a base camp in the snow while hiking long treks in the mountains. That's hard core!

I don't think the deer would notice as long as you didn't move and they didn't smell you.

Frankly, I was thinking about leaving out a couple bars of soap and some deoderant and laundry detergent near a feeder so the deer get used to smelling me and when they do they associate it with food.

Trackin' a mature buck in the big woods in the snow is about as hardcore as deer hunting gets...
Blasting one out of a corn field is about as soft core as it gets...

I wish I had you for all my neighbors, I might have more of their deer on my property. Yes, you can probably get a pet deer that way but I really doubt he will break any records.

I killed a beaver with a pitch fork throwing it like a javelin at about 20 yards at night- does that count!?

When I used to hunt PA ( still do on occasion )

I would take my hunting clothes an leave them along known deer trails for a day or 3 at a time. I'd do this often before the rifle season opening. I would retrieve them about 2 weeks prior. then throw them in an airtight container.

helps in many ways... one the clothes take on the scent of the surroundings. Two the deer get used to them...

I'm usually more concerned with scent than camo, a ghillie suit is not necessary. If you have them patterned and know about where they are going to enter the field from position yourself where your scent won't be blowing towards them. Have some heavy cover behind you to break up your silouette and some light cover in front of you to concele small movements. In a perfect world you would have enough cover around you to concele yourself, a wind blowing into their bedding area that doesn't have any of your scent in it, the sun at your back, a front moving in and little or no moon.....in a perfect world that is. It's easy to fool a deers eyes but their nose will bust your ass every time if you don't pay attention to where you leave your scent and where the wind is carrying it.

I don't worry about my scent at all, I just pay attention to what the wind is doing. If I were bow hunting, I would likely worry about scent some. Since I hunt from the ground, I can move to wherever is best for the given situation.

I killed a Bobcat at about 3 steps by propelling a broadhead tipped arrow through its shoulder.

Good luck with your hunt. New deer hunter? You could do worse than to ask around here. Some good guys, with a lot of experience. Might want to pry some more info out of Weda if you get a chance... The man knows hunting.
