Was just curious after reading a bunch of information on fragmentation with grain weights and velocity out of gas guns. The answer I'm trying to figure out is has anyone if chrono'd Hornady 55 FMJ out of a 12.5" AR? From what I've read 55gr FMJ needs to be above 2700 to get reliable fragmentation. Thinking about going with the 55's due to cost versus the heavies, for storage.

I think i chrono'd some 55 FMJ's (factory ammo) at like 2500 out of my 16"
I get my hand loads over 2800 using 55gr vmax with IMR3033 (compressed) (can't remember exact velocities off top of my head) So that being said you might be able to get handloads close.
why are you set on the FMJ's what are you intending to use it for...hopefully not for varmits?
If you just want it to store up some cheap ammo for target and what not who cares about fragmentation

Specifically for tissue damage, I'm not a hoarder or bunker person was just curious since the 55's need 2700 before they will fragment. They will be alot cheaper than buying a k or 2 of 75 HPBT's. Likewise I could shoot alot more of the 55's for the money.

I assume your concern would be performance on 2 legged varmints? I don’t doubt the fmj would give better penetration, but I think the sp would hold together at the velocity you would get with such a short barrel. I wouldn’t rule out sp bullets.
I shoot a lot of Hornady 55 fmj’s and they are a great bullet for the money; better accuracy than other fmj’s I’ve tried. All of the frag info I’ve seen was using M193 and M855. The Hornady 55gr fmj may not act the same as the M193 (difference in jacket thickness, difference in cannelure).

Yes, more of from a defensive standpoint. I'm not of the thinking the world is gonna end or nor am I next to be on the backyard bunkers or whatever that show is. I think the Hornady 55's FMJ would act differently due to having a thicker jacket as not fragmenting as easily or atleast from a SBR. But I do want a good round to stockpile 1 or 2k of for defensive purposes. The problem is finding a cheap round that will fragment and the velocities that I could obtain from a 12.5", I could be wrong but I thought the sp's would disentigrate (not sure of spelling) without any penetration. Also if I did go with a k or 2 of the heavier stuff I bet it would have a considerable POI/POA of the 55's.

Sorry I can't help. Either route you go, I'd bet a couple of whatever bullet you go with at 'in the house' range would make someone want to stop whatever it is they were doing to you.
