Had a surefire can lost during return for service years ago. Shipping company did not initially understand the gravity of the issue and their initial response was to call it “lost” and issue a check for replacement. Of course they were kindly informed such an item needs to be found. Several on holds and transfers later and we reached a suitably empowered person who understood the gravity of having an NFA item lost at their wharehouse, and did not look forward to the BATFE investigation which would ensue when we called and reported it lost/stolen while in their possession. With the proper motivation, it was indeed located and eventually sent on its way. BATFE was kept updated along the way, as we were in process of our regular SOT renewal at the time and didn’t want any complications. As I recall, they gave us and the shipping company a couple days to sort it out before they were going to step in.
