Windex, yep you heard me, using Windex during barrel break-in. I purchased my Dad a new Howa 1500 Supreme Varminter in 22-250 that he wanted, and upon reading the Howa instructions for barrel break-in they said to use Windex after each subsequent patching of copper solvent to dry up the oil in the barrel. Anyway, we spent almost 6 hours at the range today with the rifle, and we were burning 45 grainers at 4000 fps with very nice groups to show for during break-in. Many shots were on top of the next, and it was a fun gun to shoot. I have to say I was very impressed with the Howa.

The real secret suace for barrel break in and bore cleaning is virgin blood, followed by windex. This has been a deep, deep secret but since the windex is out of the bag I'll let the other one go too.

I assume because of the ammonia in the windex for the copper?

It says to pull the oil from the barrel, since oil becomes carbon deposits during burnishing. It is strange, but thought I would throw it out there, as neither I or my Dad had ever heard of it before.

I haven't heard of that use. I've used Windex to clean the bore when using corrosive ammo to kill the salts but hadn't heard the other.

My wife saw that my pistol on the nightstand looked dusty one time many years ago. She helped me out and cleaned it with windex.

well, amonia is a grease cutter, so i suppose it would work to cut oil from a barrel

Windex is primarily Ammonia and Alcohol, which should both do a good job of removing oils.

I use ammonia free windex/window cleaner to dampen my brass polishing media, running it by itself for a few minutes before I add the brass. I find the damp media does a much better and quicker job, but you have to let the media absorb the fluid and do its swelling before adding the brass, or it swells <span style="font-style: italic">inside</span> the brass and has to be laboriously picked out of the cases after cleaning.

The question, though, is whether you really want to be shooting on an absolutely clean, dry bore.

<span style="font-style: italic">Without really being able to explain why</span>, I still prefer not to.

I always run an oiled patch, followed by a dry patch down the bore before firing after cleaning.

It says it is to keep the oil out during the burnishing process of the barrel, by doing so it keeps carbon from forming. I do not know the science, but I am sure someone much more knowledgable than me can tell whether it actually helps or not.
