Rifle Scopes Have mount - Need scope for carbine

Greetings all

A couple of months ago I was walking through my local sporting goods store and saw the cutest little Colt 6920. I couldn't resist. I've taken it to the range several times and poked some paper. I did reasonably well with the irons considering my poor eyesight. It all came back to me fairly quickly. Back in the day I was better than average with my issue M16A1. Not so much anymore.

All of my bolt rifles have good quality big glass on them. I've spoiled myself. I have no desire for big glass, but I think there is something out there that is appropriate for this. I'm just not sure what it is.

As it stands now I have an Aimpiont M4 with a 3x on Larue mounts. I took this setup off of my Sage stocked M1A just to try it out on the 6920. It seems like this is really what this setup was made for in the first place. Who'd a thunk it. The sight alignment with the rear BUIS, red dot, and A2 front post was easy. It worked well but I feel like I want more.

I have a brand new Larue SPR/M4 mount with a LT742 trijicon RMR ring half mount. This is an empty mount with just the RMR on it. I see quite a few 1-X or 1.5-X scopes on AR's but usually of the longer barreled verity.

Some things I've been looking at are the NXS 1-4 with the new FC-3G and several US Optics.
Is it overkill to get a 1-4, 1.5-6, or 1-8 on this setup? Do I need to change out to a low-pro gas block with a flip up front sight to accommodate the scope? What scope would you use for this RMR mount setup? Do I scrap the RMR idea and find somewhere else for it to rest?

Great rifle and I take it you're mostly going to use it as a range plinker and such. Wanting more isn't really a bad thing and one of the 1-6x scopes is pretty ideal for a setup like that. I don't know if I would necessarily run with a 1-8x as then it starts into the overkill region. I have a 1-8x on a MK12, and it's pushing it in both size and heft, but I also push the shooting out to 800 yards too with it. Apples and oranges though in rifles.

I would go with a 1-6x if you don't mind up to 25oz and 10"+ of scope alone. The new Vortex Razor, possibly the Leupold but the jury is still out on the illumination on that one, or maybe step up into the USO SR8 for the 1-8 category if you have the money and want what's supposed to be the cat's ass now.

If you want to leave it streamlined and lightweight, then a 1-4x will be sufficient, but that really isn't much more than you're already playing with on the 3x mag and Aimpoint.

As for the fixed front sight assembly, well if it were me and I were going to a 1-x scope, I would chop that sucker off and slap a BUIS on the front, but that's just me. I wouldn't pull it, just chop it, coat the bare metal and use it as a low pro gas block. The front sight can be disregarded, but for me that visible blur when at magnification is just annoying as hell.

I'm going to the range this weekend to see how this little gem preforms at distance. I robbed a 2.5-10 NXS off of another rifle for now. Its funny how big that little scope looks on this rifle. If it won't shoot a group at 300 there won't be any point in spending money on better optics. I'll just return the Aimpoint and NXS to their respective rifles and possibly get another Aimpoint setup for it. I certainly will be disappointed though, It showed such promise at 100yds.

I've been reading about that SR8. That would be the cat's ass! I'd even settle for a USO 1.5-6 DFP. Even though I'm a Nightforce guy I'm not apposed to giving USO a try. I tend to agree that the 1-4 NF may not be enough. It is the same length as an M4 w/3x and shorter than the the SN-4 buy an inch. I have it on good authority that size does matter. While not a major concern in this case, it is a factor.

I'm going to go ahead and chop the front sight. It may work well and all, but its not very damn sexy. That process is easily doable. I've got a front BUIS and handguard setup on the way.

Check out the Steiner 1-4! Super daylight bright illumination and built like a tank.
