Hawk Hill pic rail mounted data card holder - thoughts?

I've been kicking around the idea of biting the bullet on this, looks like it would be a nice addition for matches instead of fiddling around with a wrist band. Just looking for real world pro's and con's as this isn't just $20-$30, any insight is much appreciated.

I'm not sure what $119. is going to bring you that a $15. Scope Dope Disk inside your scope cap will not. And I only use the Scope Dope Disk where it's impractical to use my full Data Book, or my Ballistic App on my I phone which is not very often.... But it's your money, spend it how you like....

This is strictly for PRS matches and barely ever is it convenient to have your phone or data book with you, especially during positional stages where movement is involved. I've been running a wrist band, but it slides around a little at times and costs me time trying to read it during quick paced stages.

For matches I've started to transition away from using a wrist mounted dope holder and have started using a rifle mounted dope holder. The pros to a rifle mounted set up are that it is easier to switch your focus from looking through the scope with your dominant eye to the dope card with your non-dominant eye when it's mounted farther out and close to level with your eyes. Comparing it to using a wrist coach I've found it easier to see the dope while I was in multiple different positions and that helped reduce my stress level a bit when I'm going from target to target and I want to make sure I'm getting the right dope. When I was using the wrist coach there were times I was in a position and I'd have to break my cheek weld, look down at my dope card, come back into position, apply the corrections, and repeat. I made it work but having the dope at eye level where it's easier to focus on it is great. I don't think there are many downsides to a rifle mounted dope holder, I mean it blocks your view a little bit shooting but the flip side of that, again, is that with the dope holder at basically eye level your non-dominant eye is picking up the dope on the card. Cost is another downside but worth it I think, I know the guys from Hawk Hill, they are fantastic dudes but understand that it's not bias talking when I say that their dope holders are the best on the market in terms of quality and utility.

Something that I've started to copy from a lot of guys is using masking or painters tape to write the dope on. In the past I used index cards and it's a cumbersome solution IMO now that I look back on it. I got a roll of generic masking tape for about $3.00 and that should be enough to last for a long, long time. Add in some Sharpies and you're good to go.

Use the sidewinder all the time. About fool proof, cheap and with some time you can pre-write dope cards for stages or do it on the fly. You can also just stick painters tape on top of it too. Well worth it...

I just write my dope on it for the stage and stick it on the scope or wherever. Comes off no problem when the stage is done and leaves no residue. Easy to read and simple to use. They aren't worth crap if they get wet or rained on, but I have a wrist coach and grease pencil too if I need it.

Cheap and easy solution; if you want to see your dope without having to break cheek weld, rearrange your front scope cover so when open it flips directly to the left and use painters tape to write the dope on it.

I use the spuhr mounted hawk hill and I love it. I know it's more expensive than the rest but I like the way it looks like it belongs and isn't just stuck on. I prefer that over a dope disk because I can write whatever I want on it by sticking masking tape to it then peeling it off once I'm done a stage.

'And a personal reason I purchased the hawk hill is because I was on a road trip and stopped at their shop not knowing they aren't an open shop. The owner still let me in, gave me a tour of the place while they were making barrels and was an overall great guy. I like to give places like that my business. That has nothing to do with the product, just a personal experience with them.

I just started running a sidewinder and think it's great. Cheap and gets the job done. I still use my wrist coach to initally write all ranges and pertinent info, draw a diagram and just write the dope on my sidewinder. It's nice as you never have to break position to see your dope.

I run the sidewinder and simply use a dry erase pen on the plastic cover. I leave the white note card inside to provide contrast. Between stages, I just wipe it clean with some spit and write the new dope.

What Paydirt said. They work well. I write the dope changes for a stage on a roll of painters tape and stick it on where a card would go. 8541 tactical had a video on wrapping a rubber coated gear tie to the scope and using binder clips to hold a card.

offerings such as the sidewinder or new dope holder from col-tac come in at a price point that makes the hawk hill a bit hard to swallow. Hell with the before mentioned options, now you have no excuse to not have a dope holder on every rifle with a magnified optic you own.

I use this guy. Its call the X-ring RDS its 45 bucks on amazon and comes with 3 double sided dope cards. Mounts direct to your scope base.

That's what I've done in the past, works well but my buddies gave me a hard time about my ghetto rig. But it only cost me a couple bucks.

So, rather than suggest an alternative I'll just answer the OPs question:

I like the Hawk Hill holder. I did modify it by using a piece of Velcro to hold a clear plastic business card holder instead of the cards that come with it.

I slip rite in the rain business cards in it with my dope on them for stages at a match and I like it. Folds flat when not needed.

Not cheap but nothing well made ever is.
